On the other hand, when you have republicans in power you get runaway "development" without concern to the long and short term costs to the existing taxpayers. Welcome to Sprawlville.

Bigboxes (and all those fabulous low paying jobs) are not forever. The scars the leave on the land they're built on last much longer. You can't just tear them up and have that cornfield back.

We're still trying to get through the glut of McMansions from the last housing bubble. Not only didn't those houses sell, but there's still the bills for the locality for the infrastructure to support them...water lines, roads, school system expansions.....all those costs still exist.

At least Democratic-led towns don't allow as many of these mistakes to be made. In fact, they usually RESULT in Democratic-led town. Town of Bethlehem NY is a stunning example. After 150+ years of republicans, they were thrown out after development projects went WAY costly. The costs of the MallWart with its increased police requirements, their tax abatement and the infrastructure (water, sewer (became necessary) roads (rebuilds for additional traffic) and additional charges for added public transportation got them finally removed from office. All they got were WalJobs that were snatched up by Albany city residents for the most part.
