However during the Second Temple period it was effectively legislated out of existence. The procedures required to execute someone were so onerous as to make it virtually impossible to execute anyone. It is said that if more than one person was executed in seven years, then the Sanhedrin (Jewish religious government) was deemed to be unusually murderous. |
