Just curious: assuming that there are sufficient MREs available, can any soldier ask for any kind of MRE, even if they are under no religious obligation to require it?

You bring them along in big cases full of MREs.

One takes whichever ones he wants and likes. They're just sitting there in cases.

Halal ones, vegeterian ones, thai chicken, ratatoullie, tetrazzini etc.

And how do mess halls handle the situation? At most mess halls I was at you could ask NOT to have this or that, or choose one or another of something if there was a choice, but I can't imagine separate mess lines for Kosher or Halal as I believe would be strictly required if you were observant.

It's a buffet-like line.
You eat what you want.

Dining facility personnel are supposed to be trained to know what's halal or kosher and what's not so as to assist anybody asking about something.

Everything has changed since the 'Nam times.

Army DFACs rock. Contractors who are performing unsatisfactory service get replaced when the contract is up if enough soldiers give them unsatisfactory ratings on forms available at the facility.

It's like Yelp.
