What I say is true. But consider that homogeneity of treatment is an essential part of a military force. Separate rations is also a divisive element to troop cohesion. Suppose that a force must be sent into the field and there is insufficient "special" food for Jewish and Muslim soldiers. Should they be excused from deployment?

BTW, the Geneva Conventions agree with me, in that as a POW you are only entitled to the same rations as the equivalent soldiers of your captors get (i.e., enlisted or officers). As it was expressed to us in training: "if a Viet Cong grunt gets fish heads and rice, you get fish heads and rice."

If you accept that the dudes at Gitmo are POWs they have an incredible fluff in getting Halal meals. You have to provide reasonable religious instruments and worship opportunities, but that doesn't include special food.
