The MT represents one late tradition here — they just guessed. Other traditions occur in the Samaritan Pentateuch and in the Ancient Versions (chiefly the LXX). Here is a side-by-side reading of the MT/LXX disagreements between Adam and Abraham. You know who added numbers to the scriptures, right? It was not the Masoretes. The original author, one hopes. But it is patently obvious from the variants we have that the numbers in the genealogies have been mistranscribed several times, so that we cannot be sure what the original numbers were. |
