Saw 998 today, and shot the front and rear:

Front, at 34 Street and 3 Avenue about to enter service:

Rear, at 57 Street and 3 Avenue, sitting disabled after breaking down---antifreeze/coolant leak:

Enjoy.

Tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk.

Too bad it broke down. Do you know if it had to be towed away? Perhaps it may have been fixed on scene and returned to service?

I saw the same bus (separate posting) Monday afternoon in L.I. City, on Hunterspoint Ave. just outside the Midtown Tunnel aroun 4:50 PM. No doubt it was waiting to go thru the tunnel and then do its revenue trip back to Queens.

I know that this model is called a Viking but is it manufactured by Flyer? Thanks.

In the past when NYCTA express buses broke down in Manhattan, if a maintenance truck couldn't get the bus going, it would get towed to Manhattan depot for repairs and eventually make it's way back home. This may be a special case since the 3 of them stayed at Stengel depot.

Now hold on there. Yesterday I spent an hour standing around on Queens Plaza South and I distinctly recall seeing one them there MTA The Bus Orion Vs with an offset ORION plaque mounted on the front of the bus.

Yes, it was manufactured by New Flyer, and it was an attempt to compete with the MCI D4500.

It was a good coach, too.

However, MJQ should be able to fit a Viking, since it is a former Greyhound garage, and it occasionally may have had to handle a Trailways or Trentway-Wagar Prevost.

Yeah, that's because many people are quick to throw the MTA name at NYCTA or even MTA Bus. Never mind the fact the MTA consists of several agencies. It's like referring to one borough as New York City when all five of them form New York City.

Yeah, I guess so because I remember NYCTA's '81 and '82 GM RTS had the GMC logo on the front, but they removed them when they started using the adhesive exterior advertisements. I don't remember is the '83 buses ever had the GMC logos. Thinking even further back NYCTA buses built after 1964 or so also didn't get the GMC (and Flxible) nameplates.
