Red Hook residents hail bus plan
BY VERONIKA BELENKAYA - DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER - Wednesday, February 6th 2008, 4:00 AM

Public transportation-challenged Red Hook residents may finally be getting an easier ride.

Two proposed MTA bus route extensions from Brooklyn to Manhattan would end some of the isolation for Red Hook residents.

"I think it'll help tremendously in the long overdue revitalization of Red Hook," said community activist John McGettrick. "The closest train is at least a mile away. It definitely has increased the sense of isolation."

The much-anticipated plan would extend the B77 and the B71 buses from Brooklyn to South Ferry in Manhattan via the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

The route extensions could materialize as early as September. The plan will come up for financial review in April, said city Transit Authority spokesman Charles Seaton.

It would provide alternative routing for people affected by the reconstruction of the Gowanus Viaduct, which is scheduled to start this year and will prompt closings of the Fourth Ave. and Smith and 9th St. stations on the F and G trains, Seaton said.

The B77 bus runs from Park Slope to Red Hook and the B71, which has a low ridership, runs from Crown Heights to Cobble Hill.

"Any enhancement or extension in service will boost ridership," Seaton predicted.

Red Hook commuter Michael Kowalski said he can't wait for the plan to go into effect. A bus straight from Red Hook would cut down his travel time to Manhattan from more than an hour to 15 minutes.

"It's very hard to get to the office at 9a.m. unless you leave at 6:30 in the morning," said Kowalski, 57, who works as a risk project manager on Wall Street.

"There's no way we can rely on public transportation, which cuts down a whole constellation of activities," he said.

This is a nice plan, I'd rather take the (2) or (3), but it still is a nice plan.

I like these plans too BUT I guess by extending the B77 to Lower Manhattan, that means that the B77 would run from Van Burunt St/Red Hook to Lower Manhattan...meaning the OLD termination of 5th Av/10th St is gone! However, those riders will have to get use to the B75 at that point, huh?

As for the B71, they should think about doing a short trip from Flatbush Av to Lower Manhattan. I think that's something the MTA should consider.

Just my two cents.

It seems like the B77 would be EXTENDED PAST its Red Hook terminal into the Tunnel while retaining its current West Park Slope/Gowanus terminal. This would provide the intended relief for projected viaduct-related subway delays. Besides, it wouldn't be a very big detour through the Hook itself.

Adding B71 and B77 local buses through the BBT will only slow down premium-fare Bklyn & SI express bus service. While I'm riding on the X15 looking at scantily-clad women on my laptop, I don't want to be delayed by buses from the projects slowing up my trip, damnit!

You have it backwards. Rush hour service quality on the B71 and B77 is going to decline if they have to fight with the regular BBT traffic. I am sure the community will find this out when it starts.

If the traffic's that bad, the BBT should have a bus lane put in it.

I wish there was some way to extend the B77 to Methodist Hospital, perhaps it can go to Batrel Pritchard Square where the B68 ends.

The B75 runs only 2 blocks way. Do you think enough Red Hook residents travel to Methodist Hospital to justify extending the route to a place where it would have to turn back using residential streets?

I do think that enough Red Hook residents would use the extension (look at the crowds the B67 attracts from there). Although NIMBYs will block the extension unless it goes to the square.

So with your "EXTENDED PAST" comment, it would run from 5th Av and 10th St to Lower Manhattan? Is that what you're implying?

The B67 doesn't go near Red Hook, I'm a bit confused?

The MTA needs to clarify the propsed routing of the B77 and B71, probably when the public hearings are announced.

Th only reason why the TA came up with this plan in the first place is because they were forced to extend some routes by the mayor to show how they would be increasing system capacity if congestion pricing goes into effect. Rather than providing new routes from outlying areas or rerouting obsolete routes, they did what would be the cheapest operationally, extend two routes with poor service a short distance without improving service levels.

I think with the new Ikea and this proposal, the B 77 will become a brand new route just completly. I am not supporting the idea of using the B 71 because it does not benifit anyone. A 2 or 3 train can do the same thing faster. Here is another suggestion create the B 102. I would be a branch off the B 103 and it would serve and stop at Park Slope and Red Hook via BBT to South Ferry and Lower Manhattan and terminate at Downtown Brooklyn via Manhattan Br (a limited loop route through Lower manhattan.)

The alternative plan is to follow the BM1 route as its limited and terminate the route at Georgetown (which is need of service anyway). With some adjustments you can eliminate both B 51 and make the BM1 first stop at 23 Street
