R&T Schedule changes effective July 16th, 2007 |
|
Posted by P-rad M on Thu Jul 12 19:11:04 2007 Saw the posting for schedule changes while I was on my way home earlier on the 16. Here there are:4 Merritt Street - Grove Street - Newport Mall: Sunday schedule times will change slightly, nothing major there. I'll get back to the major major one and give a complete details and the situation on the 99S. 16 Journal Square - Grove Street - Newport Mall - 18th Street/Target: Midday and Saturday headways are now 30 minutes instead of 20 minutes. Now the major one. Affects the 10 and 99S. 10 Bayonne - Jersey City - Journal Square 99S Bayonne - Jersey City - New York: This is why all you see on the 99S is Novas and Flxibles, Red & Shit is basically stratching the 99S ALMOST completely. 10 buses coming from 3rd Street in Bayonne WILL RUN TO NEW YORK via the 99S making ALL LOCAL STOPS. The only times the 99S will run is during RUSH HOURS. The change on the 16 is bad, especially making headways on saturdays 30 minutes. And about the 10 and 99S, all Red & Shit is doing is just killing the 99S and thus brings all the sitings of all Novas and Flxibles on the 99S and no crusiers of any kind. This is an EXTEREMELY BAD MOVE by R&T. They better they keep people happy or all hell will break loose for them. Those real cheap mother fuckers, this is exactly why the company is just plain bad now and service SUCKS. And I can say that from a daily commuter on Red & Shit as myself. |

Honestly, the concept of purchasing the 99S is very appealing. That is if Red & Tan is selling. I wouldn't do something like that until September (gotta have the equipment), but I would buy that bus line in a heartbeat.Think about it. The 99S and the 144 could work together to provide service over the Bayonne Bridge all day, every day. I would have to see if the platform fees are worth it, but that 99S could be a big strong regional bus route. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Ken, why did you have to bring up the idea? |

If anyone takes it over, I expect it would be NJT...because they can get authority over Hudson County, which originally franchised the route. |

I'm not interested in the 10. It's a local route and local routes require you to beat the buses to death to make any money. Regional and express routes don't require you to pound the bus until the screws fall out.The 99S would be tough on the buses, but they would have to work twice as hard on the 10 to make the same money. |

Ridership is not high enough to generate a return.Remember, a bus has to pay for the following: -Driver -Fuel -Maintenance -Insurance -Bus Payments So, I look at a route and I ask myself whether it is worth it to even try it. Anything less than $400 per day per bus in revenue isn't worth it. $400 is a really LOW number too, but you can start somewhere with that number if you can do weekend charters. |

Neither TAZ, MTA, or an IBOA will take over the 10 or the 99S. The 10 is part of whats making R&T. And if a company is going to take over, it would only two, Academy and NJT, mainly NJT. |

Thats too long of a route and have to have alot of buses running on the route. You have to realize that the 10 is a highly demanded route for alot of service, and its been proven and I've seen it for myself and it grows and grows. If you don't have buses enough for demand, and its not promising, your going to be screwed. Adding that on to the 10 would be diaster if another company takes over. The only companies that can do that is Academy and NJT. |

The 99S route ran all the way through Staten Island to Keansburg at one time under its pre-Drogin pre-Coach Red and Tan ownership.Back when Drogin had it there seemed to be standees on every trip in and out of the Port Authority day and night. Coach has almost killed it. Running it as a 10 will only drive away the customers on the south end - too much running time. |

I should have been born 50 years ago. Those type of routes are not only regional, they are really efficient if you can generate the on-off traffic along the way. Many NJT routes are set up EXACTLY the way private buses should be running them.I've met people that remember the 55. Drogin had some really smart bus routes. |

I'll give to the whole route from Journal Square around 18th Street and back to JSQ.Starts at D4 on Platform D at JSQ, and runs down platform D. Left on Pavonia Ave, left on JFK Blvd and then proceeds on Bergen Avenue. Runs Bergen and then left on Fairmount Ave, then right on Monticello. Left on Communipaw, left on Pacific Avenue and runs Pacific to the end of it and right on Grand. Left on Jersey Avenue, right on Newark Ave, right on Grove Street, left on Christopher Columbus Drive. Left on Marin Blvd, right on Thomas Gangemi Drive, then left on Mall Drive West. Stops at the Newport Mall bus stop for a while, then continues on Mall Drive West. Then right on Newport Parkway, and left on Washington Blvd. Then runs Washington Blvd until it turns into 18th Street and then goes down 18th and then left on Grove Street, left on 16th Street, left on Marin Blvd, right on 18th Street. Down 18th until it turns into Washington Blvd then goes up Washington Blvd then right on Thomas Gangemi Drive. Left on Marin Blvd, right on Christopher Columbus Drive, right on Barrow Street, left on Newark Ave, left on Jersey Ave, right on Grand St, left on Pacific Ave, right on Communipaw, right on Monticello, left on Fairmount Ave, right on Bergen Ave, right on Sip Ave, left into JSQ and onto Platform D and terminating at D4. |

Yeah, basically whats happens on the 16, they leave Journal Square, circle the Newport area and back to Journal Square. The route either makes or breaks the driver. Either they run fast or they will run extremely late arriving back at JSQ with barely any time to spare. See alot of that during the weekdays. |

R&T can keep the 10, for now. I don't see how NJT running the 99S out of Greenville would be any different then what R&T currently provides. Of course now I've given Joel the idea of TAZ taking over the 99S. Give R&T another few months, the 99S will be gone and customers will be screaming for someone to take over be it Academy, Joel, MTA Bus, or NJT. The one time I rode the 99S it appeared to have decent ridership, so R&T's gonna be packing buses on the 10 to unconfortable levels. |

The only way Joel can run the 99S is if he can supply the demand, and use buses that can go through PABT.What I'm trying to say with NJT at least taking over, is not the buses running on it, is if the service can be provided and run at the high demand its at already. Thats one thing most don't think about the 99S, something R&T had in good control but now they're screwing it up with this service cahnge. |

An all day route with good off-peak demand is a real winner. Those buses would simply sit on the 99S and do nothing else. |

If you buy the 99S, you might also want to buy the 99 as that is a feeder to the 99S. Also, you need 11 buses for the 99S and 3 the 99 and 6 more buses as a backup fleet(which you can get easily provided the 144 is sold) |
