The new BM4 Saturday service

A report with opinions (the BM4 on Saturday):

The old schedule was 8AM, 11AM, 3:30PM from Gerritsen Beach, 3 buses for the day. The new schedule is every hour 7AM to 6PM from Gerritsen Beach. I rode two of the new runs. I took the 10AM from Gerr Bch. Nobody else aboard but the driver all the way to Church and E 7th, where two women got on and they got off first stop Downtown (Exchange Place). I went to Midtown. Of course those two women did not NEED the BM4 as they had other options. But as for those who would have more of a dependency on it (south of Ave K), there was nobody.

Coming back, I took the 4:30PM from Midtown. A couple, perhaps sixties (I'm a terrible judge of age), was aboard but that was it. Downtown at Peck Slip we picked up about four who were traveling together. They got off at Cortelyou so they were not so dependent on the BM4. The older couple was talking to the driver, saying that they usually take the "3," I think meaning the BM3, but the "4" was good too, if not better. They seemed somewhat happy to be on a BM4 but did not seem like it made a big deal.

Obviously the data is limited to where I happened to be at what time and when it was convenient for me to take a ride (you need a good book to read after a while), but do you think the new runs are justified?

I wanted to add my hypothesis that one reason for them to increase service by 366% on a line that seemed to have few people on the existing runs as they were was that someone can show that since the buses are even more emptier one can warrant that all Saturday service be terminated and that might not have been provable with just the 3 runs that perhaps were all that were needed.

Hopefully riders will soon catch on to the new service like they did on the B103 Limited and BQM1. I do agree that there are a lot of wasted Spring Creek express runs, particularly on Saturday evenings heading towards Manhattan.

I think they are justified but I'm sure all of the perennial express bus haters will have a fit.

Why are you sure they are justified? You have no basis for being sure. You are like a sheep going to the slaughterhouse.

Is it possible that the MTA is setting up its express routes to fail?

I don't think they would buy all of those MCIs if they wanted service to fail.

Well, I guess you do have a point since the service recently started, though we'll see if you're correct in the coming months.

No, they are just providing an essential service to the people that use these routes.

No, just to replace the aging classics/fishbowls.

If the MTA wanted the service to fail they would keep the aging buses running.

Well, obviously there wasn't an immense demand for the service, but there is this time (about 6 months?) to wait for the new runs to gain popularity. If they don't, then snip snip!

In my opinion, more consistent service (hourly, half hourly) can tend to bring more riders to a line than the 3 bus a day thing or the bus that runs every once in a while. People just aren't completely aware of this new schedule yet.

Give it time - in six months, then judge.
