Buses, the universe, and everything

“42” is the only number used for a local bus route in each of the five boroughs.

B42, Bx42, M42, Q42, S42.

And 104 is the number for the Broadway route in both Queens and Manhattan.

There's no more bus on Broadway south of Columbus Circle now.

If you want to extend this to subways and els, the Second Ave el operated on Second Avenue in Manhattan and Second Avenue in Queens which is now 31 St.

And of course the Third Avenue El operated on Third Avenue in Manhattan and the Bronx, but that's not a fair comparison because they were really the same street. In fact, Third Avenue is the only numbered avenue in the Bronx.

The R operates on Broadway in both Manhattan and Queens and the M operates on Broadway in both Brooklyn and Queens.

There's also the 1 in Manhattan and Bronx, but that's also the same Broadway.

Don’t forget the R stops at 36 St in Brooklyn and again in Queens.

The R is the only line that serves all of Downtown Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan (below Canal Street), Midtown Manhattan, and Long Island City. Despite the many other lines serving these areas, the R is the only one that hits all four as part of its standard operation. (The N does so overnight and there are W specials).

In the days when the E train ran to the Rockaways, this was also true of the E train.

The J stops at Kosciuszko in Brooklyn and at Kosciuszko in Los Angeles.
