W.B.'s Bus Almanac for November 3rd

Posted by W.B. on Mon Nov 3 16:20:12 2025

November 3, 1965 - The Book of First and Last Runs

Staten Island and Brooklyn, New York
New York City Transit Authority
Staten Island Bus Division

The first express bus service, R8X, is launched as of this date. It runs from Port Richmond Square, travelling along Clove Road, Broadway and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, to Adams and Fulton Streets in Brooklyn in the rush hours. Around 1976, after the borough renaming and its prefix on regular routes changed to S, this route will be renamed X8. This pioneer route will be discontinued some time in the 1990's.

On this same day, service is discontinued on the R-105 - Clove Road line. It had begun in June 1925 under Tompkins Bus Corp. aegis, initially running from Richmond Terrace and Jewett Avenue to Seaside Boulevard in Sand Lane. From early 1927 to early 1930 this line had been suspended; when resumed its route was changed from Richmond Terrace to Richmond Road and Clove Road. Other operators over the course of its life included Staten Island Coach (March 14, 1937-1946), Isle Transportation (1946-47), the Board of Transportation (1947-53) and the current operator at the time of this line's elimination, the Transit Authority.
