Tuscarora Almanac for March 29

Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed Mar 29 07:22:21 2023

Tuscarora Surface Almanac – March 29, 1980 – The Book of Last Runs

Manhattan, New York
Avenue B and East Broadway Transit Corporation

The Avenue B and East Broadway Transit Corporation discontinues operations. Its three routes were taken over MaBSTOA. The routes were M-7 110th Street – Wall Street Express, M-8 Grand Street Crosstown and M-9 Avenue B. Upon takeover the M-7 was merged into the already existing X-23 Yorkville – Wall Street Express. The M-7 designation was also used by a MaBSTOA route.

Buses in service at the end were 609,610,613,614, 615,617,618,621,622,625 and 633.

IIRC 609 was a Flxible from around 1964.

As for buses between 625 & 633, again IIRC, these were fairly new 40' GMC's. But because of their zero maintenance if a bus needed major repairs it simply sat out of service. As long as they made some semblance of service, they were good.

There also was M7A 2nd Avenue which operated in the morning and there were the race track routes and M9A and M9B (but I don't know what these franchises were for). Anyone know what happened to the M7 Midday service?

At some point a municipal takeover was inevitable. They had such a small fleet I don't see how they could have generated enough revenue for needed maintenance and new buses, much less pay the employee salaries.

Avenue B was already getting subsidies at that time like the rest of the privates since 1974. They were supposed to be getting 13 Grumman 870's One reason for the takeover was that they were required to vacate their garage for the Two Bridges urban renewal development.

Allen: I always found it interesting that they were able to use M-7 for a route number. That number then and now was for a MaBSTOA bus.

I think the required vacatur of the garage is what really did the company in because the other private companies dealt with increases in operating costs and delays in new buses also.

And until 1974, for a TA (ex-Comprehensive Omnibus) bus, M-7 65th Street (later M29, now M66).
