Where is the Museum Fleet?

Posted by Catfish 44 on Tue Nov 22 23:46:21 2022

We’ll I spied a good number of them tonight outdoors at Eastchester in the area normally reserved for scrap. I doubt they’re scrapping the buses but what are they doing there ?

Most of them stored at Amsterdam Depot. Last time I was at ECH only museum bus there was Command RTS CNG 4904. Grand Ave did something to 4904 and the Spring Creek mechanics couldn't figure out what was wrong with the bus so its been sitting in ECH for years now.

I did see a GM Fishbowl in the green NYCTA livery driving northbound on the Henry Hudson Parkway on a Saturday AM a couple weeks ago. I didn't know what it was, but seeing this makes me think something is going on.

Was it moving under it's own power or being towed?

Reason I ask because scrap buses are usually towed to ECH, if it was running under it's own power it might have been out and about for some other reason.

Hear that Amsterdam has leaking issues and the buses had to be moved (to wherever space is available).
Hopefully that is the case, nothing more sinister.

There’s this part of me that wouldn’t be surprised if museum buses were sold or scrapped. Especially with the push to electric vehicles and the fact that Amsterdam depot may need to be reactivated when Columbia university takes over the manhattanville depot space.

Hopefully that’s all it is and as you said not something sinister from some brilliant brain.
On a side note, today was the first time I laid eyes on a few of those buses such as 2151 and 5117. Maybe 15 years now actually.

One of the problems that the historic bus fleet has is they have no Court Street. It would be nice of there was a small unused garage that could be made into something of a museum and showroom. As it is the buses are of necessity moved to the back of the garage. They are brought out occasionly for special events. But its not the same as being able to visit them on a regular basis.

There was a plan talked about. It was to have a display similar to the MOBT in Hershey. It would have been in Amsterdam depot. A vintage bus or two would have traveled 'tween the depot and the 125th st IRT (1) station for visitors who didn't wish to walk there.
The display would have had the buses placed amid scenes, with display pieces along the walls.
The museum wanted more focus on buses, which it really doesn't do at Court Street.
But that was then.

The focus is on trains because buses are always like the side order to the main meal. That's just the order of things with transit. It's also much easier to cut buses rather than trains.

Isn't this also an aftereffect of the lingering resentment towards buses that stemmed from the fallout of the elimination of streetcars?

That's hard to say. Considering that the streetcars were eliminated so long ago and many that were around then are no longer here.

What about the former Trolley Terminal at Essex and Delancy?

Re-install trolley tracks and display both Trolley's and Buses!

So, could Tracks be re-installed?

Could Busses and trolleys be loaded on flatbeds or towed and buses have High-rail trucks installed?

Perhaps there are other options?

No ramp is available.
The sole access was covered over by the outbound inner traffic lanes by Robert Moses, when the BQE was being constructed.

Could they be brought in by subway tracks off Manhattan Bridge or tunnel

There is no way, traction wise,to get to the facilities.
There was a additional space along the outbound Jamaica track, that was specifically made for expansion of the Essex st station with 4 tracks and three platforms.

The ROW was used, however, to create the tower governing Chrystie st Connection, and the track way pretty much used for the eastbound/southbound Chrystie st connector track from Houston st.

You can see the tracks way at the staircases that connects to the F line on the lower level.
The Trolley terminal is cut off, unless some new construction opens it up.
