Was the BxM-7 the first Bronx express bus route? The express bus network was designed to provide safe transportation from outer borough neighborhoods into Manhattan. By the 1970s crime on the subways was out of control. Sound familiar? The express buses allowed the middle-class NYC taxpayers to safely get to their jobs and back without getting robbed or assaulted on the subway. The express buses were a good idea which in a small way helped keep the middle-class from fleeing the city entirely in the 1970s. The thing that helped in a big way was the election of Ed Koch as Mayor in 1977. |

Dan: I believe that the Riverdale Express started first. However a major contributing factor to the expansion of express bus service was the rising crime in the subway system. Unless you were riding in the rush hour you took the express bus home even if you couldn't afford it. I guess one had to live through that time to appreciate what it was like. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
