More SBS routes.

Posted by Chicago44 on Fri Jun 11 12:53:33 2021

ARe there any plans to add more SBS routes anytime soon, if there are plans, which route(s) are going to be looked at.

I would like to see the B41, Q46 & Bx19 routes getting SBS.

With Omni here, there is no reason for SBS.

So unless it eventually does with readers at the rear doors, Omni doesn't really solve the problem that SBS solves, namely that with SBS boarding is far faster because passengers can use all 3 doors.

Don't SBS routes

1) Have longer distances between stops than even LTD buses, and
2) Still save time even with OMNY (they spell it with a "Y") since
  a) People still use Metrocard, and some even coins, to board buses, and
  b) Even OMNY takes some time, with people sometimes needing to swipe their cards in front of the reader several times before it registers?

1. Not necessarily. Example: 14th Street in Manhattan.
2. Yes, if OMNY requires everyone to enter through the front door, which SBS doesn't.

There may be a very slight increase in dwell time on SBS buses with OMNY because you have to tap in if you're using OMNY whereas with MetroCard you already did the equivalent of that curbside. But that's still a rather trivial sacrifice if it someday takes away the need to install, maintain, and deal with those curbside machines, or at least most of them.

I think SBS has OMNY readers at every door, right now.

I have yet to see or hear about fare inspectors dealing with OMNY fare payments though. Anybody know what that process is like?

There's a major increase in dwell time IF everyone has to enter through the front door, even if the tapping takes no significant extra time.

No one has yet confirmed that OMNY will eventually allow passengers to enter at all three doors.

Yeah, haven't been on an SBS in a couple of months but when I got on the M14A, I think around April, all 3 doors' OMNY readers indicated they were ready for a tap, and I think the exterior signage telling people about SBS actually said to tap on board.

This is something I didn't think they would do since you can usually see the fare inspectors waiting at a stop you're arriving at and anyone holding a contactless credit card attempting to ride for free can just tap quickly before the doors open at the stop they see the inspectors waiting at.

When you tap, do you get a receipt to show the inspectors? If so, does that significantly hold up the time until the next person entering can tap?

One of the current downsides of OMNY is that when you tap (anywhere), you don't get any feedback other than that you are ok to board / go through the turnstile. You don't know whether a free transfer went through and aren't given any type of paper. You can get clues from going on your bank's app and checking pending transactions, but that's nothing official or final.

All I can suggest is this, as I just got off an M15SBS about an hour ago and several people did use OMNI......IIRC I think the fare inspectors have hand held computers? Don't they zap your payment card to show you paid? I'm just not sure because no inspectors boarded anywhere between South Ferry & 57th St. where I got off and walked to the Q60 to get back to Queens.

In other cities with system-sponsored tap farecards (not personal credit cards), I've experienced being checked where the inspector would take my farecard and tap it to their reader which would confirm I paid. Since I've never personally confirmed that this capability also applied to personal credit cards, as in the case of OMNY, I wanted to ask here.

There is no OMNY card proper yet. All of the taps are either credit/debit cards or smartphones/watches synchronized with a means of payment. And they always charge full fare (no unlimiteds or half-fares available). MTA has not yet put out the option to get their own contactless card detached from a bank/credit account.

This question has only been answered very recently in this thread. It wasn't totally obvious that the inspector had software that could verify that the OMNY card had just been used for boarding this bus, and in fact various people said they didn't know.

If it's so obvious, why wouldn't anyone say it?

For all I knew before this thread, the reader on the bus would give you a paper receipt that you can show to the inspector. That is, it would act just like a fixed outdoor reader.

Do credit cards keep a record of the last place they were used? Only if such information is written to the "chips" on cards could inspectors check cards for it.

Or the cards/devices that have been validated within a certain timeframe could be noted in a central registry that the inspector's reader can also access and compare to.

Since the MTA lets you sign up for an account that keeps track of all of your OMNY usage across multiple credit cards, this makes the most sense.

A handheld reader, right? You don't mean that you have to get up and go back to the reader and tap again?

Either way, I hope that the number of fares/transfers used also displays on the reader, because the passengers riding along won't have any proof of anything with them.
