Pardon a memory that veers off the topic, which is mainly on the need of workers to get to low-paying jobs without getting a friend to drive them.--- About 40 years ago, this New Yorker on a day's outing decided to ride the full length of #23. I probably rode ex-Pennsy to Chestnut Hill West and began my adventure at the loop. I may have scribbled notes, with times and items of interest as we headed to Erie and Broad. Then we entered the one-way pattern. Below Market Street, our follower tailed us. Some blocks later, a dispatcher stepped out of his sedan, waved to the operator, unloaded us to the follower, and had my car head north via one of the turnbacks on a cross street running from 12th Street to 11th. I don't recall how I returned from Bigler to my New York train. --- My recollection is that the largest crowd got off at Erie. |
