W.B.'s Bus Almanac for September 14th

Posted by W.B. on Mon Sep 14 06:14:25 2020

September 14, 1964 - The Book of Last Runs

The Bronx, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority
(Surface Transit Division)

Service is discontinued on the summer-only Bx-50 - Freedomland line, as the park closes for good after this season. This route had been started under Surface Transit, Inc. aegis on June 19, 1960 when the Disneyland-derived theme park first opened for business. It was also the second route to bear the Bx-50 number, the first being the Highbridge line of Surface Transportation System which was launched on January 29, 1942, suspended for much of World War II after 1943, and resumed after the end of the war as Bx-49.

September 14, 1970 - The Book of Route Extensions

The Bronx, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority
(Surface Transit Division)

Route Bx-24 - Bailey Avenue is extended from West 246th Street and Henry Hudson Parkway to Fieldston Road and Mosholu Avenue.

(Sources: "Another Transit Improvement . . . Extension of Route Bx. 24 - Bailey Avenue," Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority, September 1970 [1970-71]; "Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority: The First Ten Years" by Bernard Linder, Motor Coach Age, May 1972.)

Do you know the route of the Freedomland BX-50 bus line ? As a kid, I remember my family and I traveling by subway from Brooklyn and on that day I remember the name Gun Hill Rd.

Did the BX-50 begin and terminate at Gun Hill Rd ?

Bill: My memory on this is a bit sketchy so take what I say with a pound of salt. The Bx-15 Gun Hill Road bus was extended from it normal eastern terminal (Baychester Av?) into Freedomland when it was open.

The Bx-50 was the shuttle that ran between Pelham Bay Park and Freedomland. I rode it several times but I do not recall ever seeing a "Bx-50" sign.

This means that the modern Bx50 is roughly the same as the old Bx50!

Sorry. I confused the Bx23 with the Q50!

Correct. The Bx50 Freedomland is basically the same as the current Bx23
