The new 146th Street depot on the block of Lenox Avenue between 146th and 147th Streets opens on this date. It was built starting in 1938 on the grounds of an old New York Railways car barn which was deemed unsuitable for housing buses. The new facility has a capacity for 275 buses (including double deckers), and a fuel tank capacity for 40,000 gallons of gas and diesel oil.
For several years under NYCO aegis, this garage will house the following routes:
- 3 - Lexington Avenue
- 4 - Lexington and Lenox Avenues
- 7 - Broadway, Columbus and Lenox Avenues
- 10 - Eighth Avenue-Central Park West
- TB - Triborough Bridge (of which today's M35 - Manhattan-Wards Island is the sole surviving remnant; the M60 route of today is of no relation to any of the TB branches, though it did supersede the Manhattan-Astoria leg of the M35)
(146th Street has been known since 1993 as the Mother Clara Hale depot and has been upgraded several times over the years.)
