W.B.'s Bus Almanac for July 5th

Posted by W.B. on Sun Jul 5 19:45:29 2020

July 5, 1939 - The Book of Route Extensions

Manhattan, New York
Fifth Avenue Coach Company

Route 20 - 57th Street Crosstown's western terminus is extended from its once and future west end of 55th Street and 12th Avenue to the West 42nd Street Ferry. In addition, it appears at least some runs of the 15 - Jackson Heights line will also travel to this new terminus, if a news article of the time is of indication; its northern/eastern terminus remains the World's Fair in Queens for the duration thereof. The 20 will run to the Ferry (a.k.a. Pier 83) until December 6, 1942 when, in accordance with federal Office of Defense Transportation (ODT) restrictions, it is cut back to 55th and 12th.

Only some Route 15 buses went to Corona Gate at the New York World's Fair.
Most Route 15 buses continued to terminate at 82 St & Northern Blvd

Didn't some NYCO TB's also go to the World's Fair?

Correct. There was a special 1939/40 World's Fair NYCO route that started at the Mott Haven RR Station, ran across 138 St, Bronx, over Triboro Bridge, Astoria Blvd to Corona Gate at the World's Fair. It was a premium fare service.

But do you remember any 15 buses going to 42nd Street Pier as the Times article suggested, as the 20 had back then?

Hmm. May've been the way the article was written.
