Buses replace streetcars on the Lexington Avenue and Lexington & Lenox Avenues lines. The trolleys had been run by New York Railways. Streetcar service on Lexington began on April 1, 1895 by horsecar, replaced by cable cars on October 7, 1895; the entire route was electrified on May 5, 1901. The new bus service will be operated by New York City Omnibus as Routes 3 and 4, respectively.
This completes the motorization of New York Railways' longitudinal (north-south) routes; all remaining rails-to-rubber 'bustitutions' over the next two months will be of crosstown (east-west) routes.
