Post COVID-19 bus services

Posted by DieselBusFan on Tue Mar 24 10:16:29 2020

I hope that everyone is heeding all the warnings and advisories about COVID-19. I am wondering what the inter-city bus service will look like after COVID-19. My feeling is that there is likely to be a continuing diminution of inter-city buses. This is not what we would want, but I expect another shake-out and more route and frequency reductions. This right now is speculative, but what do you think?

If we solve things by Easter, it will be fine. If not, it will be complicated. A lot of the marginal stuff will go away, but it is the marginal stuff that drives yield. I can see people going to war on the corridors for a bit, but with the corresponding drop in charter demand, I can also see mom & pop companies picking up individual routes and forming a new Trailways-like entity.

It won't be by Easter in NYC but other parts of the country might be able to slowly restart normal life and economic activity by Easter.

By Easter, it will have started to spread to the mid-section of the country, like WY, ID, ND, SD, MT. In Westchester, where its started before NYC, the curve may have started to flatten.

If the chloroquine treatment works as early results show, we can start normalizing around Easter even here. The testing has to stay in high gear, though.

First the testing has to get into high gear.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Certain areas that have a certain amount of population densities like NY, California or any large urban areas will probably continue to have more instances of the disease than states with wide open spaces where often your closest “next door” neighbor is at least a mile away.
