11c and 20/84

Posted by njbus25 on Wed Dec 4 09:55:10 2019

I received this notice from the port authority last evening:

"Saddle River Tours has canceled all 11C & 20/84 Buses until further notice. Please contact the Carrier for further information." Anyone know if SRT gave up on these former R&T routes and any contingency plans?

There is a contingency plan being worked on now. I received the tap yesterday afternoon. If it works out, those routes will be back in service by the end of the week.

So SRT is done?

I do not know that to be the case. They have been trying to move the 11C and 20/84 since the summer. It could be that they no longer want to be in the commuter business. I don't want to speculate beyond that.

My gut feeling is that the routes will be back in service by Monday at the latest IF the process takes its natural course. I expect the 55 to also be picked up as well.

Ok, thanks for the info. They probably want out since they "lost" the bergen county local contract, which was the main reason they picked up the routes in the first place.

With all the service disruptions, there may not be too many riders if it comes back.

It is a pain in the arse to scale up to handle such a big contract and then lose it. The overhang of the larger facilities and staffing is very expensive. That is very hard to fix without a structured process.

Then again, you have to be able to train drivers from scratch or steal school bus drivers to reliably operate large NJT bus contracts. If you can't do that, you cannot maintain the cost structure to compete. Meanwhile, NJT fixes their driver shortages by stealing their contractor's drivers lol. It is the circle of life.

Reminds me of the privates falling apart in the late 1970's and early 80's (like Somerset Bus).

The routes were originally run full time rockland/ red and tan with just a handful of runs that saddle river took over a few years ago when rockland abandoned them.
