W.B.'s Bus Almanac for November 5th

Posted by W.B. on Tue Nov 5 06:17:55 2019

November 5, 1962 - The Book of Bus Depot Reassignments

Manhattan and Bronx, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (Surface Transit Division)
New York City Transit Authority - Manhattan Bus Division

Effective as of this date, the "Central Bronx" bus depot of the former Surface Transportation System, located at 126th Street and Second Avenue in upper Manhattan and operated by MaBSTOA since its March takeover of Fifth Avenue Coach and Surface Transit routes, is taken over by the Transit Authority to house the 180+ buses used for the six routes of its Manhattan Bus Division (M-1 - Madison-Chambers, M-3 - 49th-50th Street, M-7 - 65th Street, M-11 - York Avenue, M-13 - Journal Building and M-15 - First and Second Avenues), replacing two older garages at East 100th and East 108th Streets. This depot will later bear the code 'MAN' (for Manhattan Bus Division) on fareboxes of buses assigned thereto.

Prior to the switch, Central Bronx was home to the following ex-STS/ST routes: Bx-1 - Concourse-138th Street, Bx-2 - Concourse-Hub, Bx-5 - Bruckner Boulevard, Bx-6 - Throggs Neck, Bx-6A - Locust Point, Bx-6B - Throggs Neck Stadium, Bx-7 - Boston Road, Bx-8 - Williamsbridge Road, Bx-9 - Eastchester Road, Bx-12 - City Island-Fordham, Bx-12A - Fordham Road-Pelham Parkway, Bx-12B - Orchard Beach, Bx-13 - Castle Hill Avenue, Bx-14 - Edenwald Avenue, Bx-14A - Edenwald Shuttle, Bx-15 - Gun Hill Road, Bx-15A - Hillside Homes, Bx-16 - Webster Avenue, Bx-17 - Allerton Avenue, Bx-18 - Macombs Road, Bx-22 - Country Club-Spencer Estates, Bx-23 - Crosby-Layton Avenues, Bx-49 - Highbridge, and possibly the summer-only Bx-50 - Freedomland. With the exception of Bx-2 which is reassigned to Kingsbridge, all other routes (and the fleets stored therein) are transferred to the Coliseum depot across the river in the Bronx.

As well, two ex-STS/ST Manhattan routes heretofore assigned out of Amsterdam - M-103 - 59th Street Crosstown and M-106 - 42nd Street Crosstown - are transferred to the former New York City Omnibus/Fifth Avenue Coach Lines depot at 54th Street and Ninth Avenue.

Thanks. I wondered when and how the 126th St. Depot became a TA location.

If I recall, it was an open air parking lot not too far from the Central Bx STS garage.

I think these were the original East Side Omnibus and Comprehensive Omnibus garages.

Cool! Does this mean the Bx-1 was also operating from COL depot.

I do remember the "MAN" letter on 126th fareboxes. I was able to figure out most and that's how I learned of the depot names. However, in Manhattan depots those threw me for a bit, and I actaully learned there was a depot named 132 St, and then the OTS (as well as the others) made sense.

The irony being that, years later, 132nd Street depot would be demolished, the newer Manhattanville depot put in its place, and 126th Street having a "CXXVI" decal.
