Bus Renumbering [September 1988 Motor Coach Age: New York Area Notes]

Posted by Union Tpke on Mon Jul 8 04:16:06 2019

On Google Books, a portion of the September 1988 issue of Motor Coach Age is available by snippets. I have been able to take advantage of Google Books by using this website and was able to get all of the text for the portion of bus renumbering, which I compiled here. This is mostly right, but there are either some errors, or NYCT decided to renumber some routes to different numbers. I had heard that the Malba Shuttle would have been renumbered Q71. Is this where the rumor originated or was it based in fact? Also, there are some weird things, such as the Q44A becoming the Q87 instead of the Q46, the Q44FS becoming the Q74 instead of the Q20, and the Q44VP becoming the Q50 instead of the Q74, among others. Do any people here know more about this? Thanks.

Thanks for the post UT. I have that issue of MCA and never noticed or recalled the proposed changes most of which did come to pass. Because I could retrieve only a part of your compilation, I scanned the full page in case others had the same issue. Please click on the image for full size.

The list is a work in progress. As you point out some of the final numbers were changed

Odd that the Q5A -> Q85 was not mentioned. Was that in the books? And what about the Q5AS (Laurelton Shuttle, now defunct like the Rosedale Shuttle) ... did that have a putative replacement route number?

I thought that was not given a replacement because it had already been done away with.

As for the Q5A, technically that didn’t become the Q85, it was combined with the Q5AB, making a new route, the Q85. Like the B82, B43 and (new) B47.

That link unfortunately has a bunch of adult clickbait sites, and can't even get to that pic.

From what I see, in Manhattan, the changeovers were effected over a period of 6 years (1989-95).

It began in 1986 with the M34 and M42.

Yeah, but that MCA page explained future renumberings. And they didn't mention the changeover of the designation of the 106th Street branch of the M19 to M106.

Which, of course, was the last one to change.

They also didn’t mention M13 to M8, which happened together with the M96 and M116.

It also doesn’t mention the M29/M66. I always thought that was at the same time as the whole 57th Street/72nd Street reform.

I don't think I saw M17 / M79 on that list, either.

I miss the Q3A, Q4A, Q5A and Q5AB (which of my first memories of the route was originally a version of the Q5A but to Bedell Street).

As Q4 said, the Q5AB was initially a branch of the Q5A. I remember the destination signs (ca. 1968) that read "5A TO BEDELL ST."

(Of course, that wasn't a terrifically precise description of the terminus. Nor was "42 TO SAYRES AVE.")

Also, the overnight routing of the Q5A at the time combined the two branches into what is the present Q85 route.

I'm not sure of the exact timeline, but today's Q85 full-time combined routing must have been instituted around the time the Q3 was extended to the airport and service increased to full time instead of rush hours only. That removed the need for Q5A/Q85 service on Farmers Blvd. south of Merrick Blvd.

I good points. I think the Q85 full-time route did happen around the time they made the Q3 full time and extended it to JFK.

Funny enough, the day that I posed this question I ended up going to the Muncipal Archives and found where it came from:

I noticed, in that list of "M" routes, M13 to M8 was not among the crosstown "corridors" to be changed. I presume this was just before the then-Grand Street line which bore the M8 designation was discontinued. When in 1987-88 would M17 have become M79, and M29 as M66, if that was from a document dated May 27, 1988 as within a TA agenda document from June 1988?

I also wonder if the Municipal Archives would have the "Proceedings of the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority" three-volume set from between March 20, 1962 and December 1967. It was from snippets of that on Google Books, for example, that I was able to piece together that, as far as they were concerned, the FACCo #2 and NYCO #2 were "merged" on Jan. 14, 1966 into - and definitely treated operations-wise as - a singular route with two branches (the former as 2A "Seventh Avenue branch," 9.48 route miles, and the latter as "Lenox Avenue branch," 7.5 route miles).

Try using this website to get more of the text for that item. The Municipal Archives might have it.
