Helicopter Crash in Midtown NYC

Posted by andy on Mon Jun 10 10:17:16 2019

About an hour ago a helicopter crashed on the roof of a building at 7th Ave. and 51st St. in Mid-Manhattan. No doubt the bus routes in the area are tied up in knots. Hopefully subways are OK.

In the 1980's, I worked at 810 7th Avenue (52nd-53rd) for 4 years. Hits close to home.

Hopefully the people on the helicopter are ok as well as the people in the building.

6th Ave is closed as far south as 42nd street. No doubt 7th Avenue has a big closure too.

MTA.info still says good service for the N/R/Q and the B/F/M.

He started down the East River, up the Hudson River, then got erratic, and flew inland. He may have lost spacial orientation in the clouds, like JFK Jr.

Interesting ,indeed. Then the pilot died crashing the chopper on a roof top , instead of killing many on the street.

Intentional landing on the roof or not, we may never know.

Evidently just one.

The helicopter lifted off in rain and fog and raced down the East River. But within minutes, the pilot was trying to return to the heliport he had just left.

The pilot, an experienced flier named Timothy McCormack, told the heliport he could not find his way.

“McCormack then stated that he did not know where he was,” a law enforcement official said on Tuesday.

That was Mr. McCormack’s last communication before he crashed and died on the roof of a 51-story office tower in the middle of Manhattan on Monday afternoon, the official said.

Sounds like a JFK Jr situation, though he was not instrument certified.
