Buses replace streetcars on the Lexington Avenue and Lexington & Lenox Avenues lines. The trolleys had been run by New York Railways. Streetcar service had begun on the avenue on April 1, 1895 in horse-drawn form, converted to cable cars on October 7 of that year; the route was electrified on May 5, 1901. The replacement bus service will be operated by New York City Omnibus as Routes 3 and 4, respectively.
This completes the motorization of all longitudinal (north-south) routes of the New York Railways streetcar network. All remaining "rails to rubber" conversions over the next few months will be of their crosstown (east-west) routes.
