Metropolitan Avenue

Posted by R42ToMoffat on Fri Mar 15 08:52:51 2019

Does anyone know why the Q54 turns off of Metropolitan Avenue and has the B24 & Q59 take care of it instead?

Is this what the original streetcar line did?

I believe so. Can you think of a better routing?

It makes more sense to me for it to stay on Metropolitan Avenue until Kent & Wythe Avenues and follow the B32 to the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza.

The Q59 can be the bus that goes down to Marcy Avenue & Rodney Street.

Then again, the Q54 has a longer route than the Q59 so the current route seems fair, but odd.

But they both use Grand Street. The Q59 is the one that uses Metro essentially for the sole purpose of crossing the BQE. Grand is the more prominent commercial street.

That’s a fair point.

I will admit that I have this weird problem of transportation lines not running down the entire street that it’s named after.

But at least the Q59 and Q54 spend the majority of their route on the streets they're named after. What about:

B26 - "Putnam Avenue" - really the Halsey St. bus. Spends a total of 4 blocks on Putnam (just 2 westbound).

B14 - "Pitkin Avenue" - mainly Sutter Ave.

The late B18 - "Wyckoff Avenue" - really Cypress Ave.

What's up with those?

Cross referencing to Subchat, in its final days, the BMT Fulton St el only had one station actually on Fulton St, Rockaway Ave and on weekends that wasn’t even used since Fulton St trains terminated at Eastern Pky on the Bway Bkln el.

Thinking about this some more, I had once come up with the notion of a "perfect" street and bus combination, wherein a single bus route traverses the entire stretch of a given street in both directions. There are fewer examples of those than you would think.

In Queens I can think of:

Woodhaven Blvd - Q11, Q21, Q52, Q53
(in the old days none of these qualified; even the Q11 ran on 94th St. instead of Woodhaven in the southernmost portion.)

Queens Blvd - Q60

Dry Harbor Road - Q29

Thomson Ave - Q39
(unless you count the half-block stretch east of Van Dam St, which is just an "entrance ramp" to Queens Blvd)

Main St. - Q44 (only since it was rerouted to the Van Wyck station)

Cross Bay Blvd / Q21 used to qualify until it was routed through Lindenwood.

Also worthy of consideration: if a portion of a street is one-way but the route traverses that street in that direction. That would include
Hollis Ave - Q2

Anyone want to offer suggestions for the other boroughs?

The B26 is the Putnam Avenue Line??!

Ok then...

What is it with misleading names in transit?

Metropolitan Avenue started at the square formed by Bushwick Avenue, Metropolitan Avenue, Maspeth Avenue, and North Second Street. Meanwhile, Grand Street was the main street in Williamsburg, leading directly to the ferry. It would make sense for cars coming from Jamaica along Metropolitan Avenue turn off onto Grand Avenue, so as to make connections with the ferry. Why both continuing on Metropolitan Avenue to its end, and go down Humboldt Street to Grand Street, when it is much more direct as it is. And to use North Second Street (since re-named Metropolitan Avenue) to First Street (since re-named Kent Avenue) or River Avenue, and then to the ferry, seems to make little sense, given that commerce was along Grand Street.
