Thanks for deciphering the route number. Would he have been heading for the Midtown Tunnel?

At 930 AM it would be coming out of the tunnel, probably lie bus lane to QMT south tube single lane which puts it out to make that odd left. Usually traffic agents on those intersections.

My personal experience is that at least 5% of express bus drivers are disgusting human beings who put their schedule as a higher priority than the safety of law abiding pedestrians.

Inconsiderate bus drivers may sound the horn or pump the brakes to show his impatience, but there's no sense in bowling someone over. Perhaps the driver didn't see the women because of blind spots that are usually clear, but unfortunately not always. Using standard caution isn't always enough. Luck more than anything in that environment. In any event the driver will be charged with the accident whether the woman was in a crosswalk or not.

If I understand this situation, the bus was out of the tunnel onto westbound 36th Street and turning south (left) onto Second Avenue. The walker was walking north. That means the walker was on the driver's side of the bus. It seems that the view on this side is excellent. The greater problem with the coaches is mirror-only visibility on the right side. As a walker (seldom in Manhattan) I attempt to make eye contact with the driver, but if I am not on his side the visibility (driver to pedestrian and pedestrian to driver) is more difficult.

Some of the NICE buses have external loudspeakers announcing "Bus turning." With all the noise in Manhattan, that might not be too useful.

That picture, though, shows the bus turning from 2nd into the tunnel. And given that the pedestrian was walking northbound on 2nd, that’s consistent with that.

I don’t know why it would have been going into the tunnel, though.

3rd ave runs don't take passengers back at that hour, so maybe after completing its run in up 3rd to 57th, it came down 2nd to take the tunnel and LIE back to its start at 164th/LIE instead of the bridge and QB to Jewel which is what it does when it is taking people to Queens...I'm only guessing..
