Teen hits 2624, jumps to 3rd Avenue

Posted by Joe on Thu Jan 10 20:16:05 2019

Extraordinary story on the Brooklyn Daily Eagle today
  • Teen jumps off Gowanus

  • ---
Note the NYS Troopers, so I guess they followed the car from the Verrazzano.

Maybe that head injury knocked some sense into him.

Either a stolen car, un-licensed driver or both IMO.

One thing that annoys me is when they said "police and state troopers. State troopers ARE police, not more, not less. It's like whenever there is a train crash, they always refer to the engineer or the motormen as the train conductor. Do some research! What they should have said if they wanted to differentiate between the Departments was city and state police.

That's true. But until recently, it was pretty rare to see NYS troopers routinely patrolling on NYC highways. Now they do, and seeing them in traffic stops is not uncommon at all.

Maybe there is some NYS Trooper routine patrolling on city highways, but I presume it is revenue protection on the bridges. After all, the tolls go to Cuomo, not DiBlasio. I think there is no Brooklyn-bound e-z pass scanner gantry on the Verrazzano, so maybe the Troopers went after this fellow on something else, speed or unsafe lane change. Troopers watch the car flow on either end of the Whitestone Bridge or the Throggs Neck, but I have not be able to see whether their cars have trunk-mounted license plate readers. There should be strict enforcement on the wise guys who obscure their plates.

The governor sent them here a while ago now and not just to patrol the bridges.

Most of the bridge and tunnel enforcement stuff is by (armed peace officer, not police officer) MTA Bridge and Tunnel Officers, and their cars were repainted to look more like trooper cars, but it says New York State on the trunk, rather than State Trooper. The BTOs wear uniforms closer to the NYPD. You will occasionally see MTA-PD at the bridge also. Cuomo put a bunch of troopers on NYC highways. The troopers are on the LIE, Belt Pkway, FDR Dr, etc Its a Cuomo v DiBlasi thing.

Most of those were upstate troopers rotated down. MTA-PD and NY National Guard were present also, as well as NYPD. Over the last year or so NYS police have staffed up the NYC group and taken to patrolling the highways. There was an old TBTA policy that BTO's would not routinely carry weapons, only the sergeants and lieutenants. Obviously, that had to be changed and it was. Now, you only occasionally see other agencies at the crossings, except during periods of heightened security, or something like a truck inspection day.

I remember reading about that as part of the Cuomo-DeBlasio feud. here were words about state troopers will now have a presence in NYC. I remember before this you'd almost never see them in NYC. Does NYSP now have barracks in NYC?

State troopers ARE police, not more, not less.

But our government in its (lack of) wisdom deliberately makes the distinction, by marking State Police cars as "State Trooper." So it makes sense for newspapers to make that distinction too, because the public sees it.

Whereas it's totally stupid when newspapers call the engineer the conductor. The ordinary public correctly thinks of the conductor as the person who takes your ticket, not the person operating the train.

They always had a Manhattan office, but that wasn't for patrol. I think they have a barracks on Wards Island, but I'm not 100% on that.

Of course, we make it worse by having certain agencies referring to their officers as police, when under NYS law, they are peace officers, not police officers. An example would be HHC.

I'll be driving to Brooklyn twice this weekend, but it will be too dark tonight, maybe I'll get a chance to swing past. MTA Bridges and Runnels has a facility for the BTO's there, and they painted their cars so it could be them.

You will always see MTA-PD at Penn and GCT since they are an amalgam of the LIRR/MNRR/SIR police forces. State troopers and national guard are also seen, particularly when security is raised. But those troopers are a post 9-11 thing, what is new and different is troopers being assigned to routine highway patrol on highways within NYC. This is something that has traditionally been left to NYPD.
