Bx4 robbery recorded by camera at exit door |
|
Posted by Joe on Sun Dec 2 11:32:01 2018 This morning about 10:20, WINS radio carried a story that may have happened on December 2, 2018. On a Bx4 approaching Parkchester or Westchester Square, two female thieves poured a liquid on the head of a woman seated near an exit door. When one offered to clean the hair, the other snatched a pocketbook and exited, followed by her companion and the victim chasing them. The two got away with about $60 and two credit cards. The story said the bus camera footage was given to police.--- So the MTA is recording some incidents inside buses! I can understand recording door situations because the films reduce phoney injury claims. Does anyone know the extent of recording camera installations and how what is recorded is downloaded? Thanks. If there are audio recorders (like those "gunshot detectors" around city locations), they may be picking up all kinds of private conversations. |

My original post needs corrections: Route Bx40 at East Tremont and St. Peter's. Date: November 12. Strange to say, the pix11 website does not include the video, merely describes it.--- NBCnewyork.com apparently has the video |

AFAIK, the recording of conversations by a third party is prevented not only by federal ;law but by NY State law as well. In NY, one of the parties may record a conversation between him/herself and another without the other party’s consent but a third party cannot. Although I believe that federal law should supersede in all cases, there are some states that require both parties to be made aware if a conversation is being recorded. |

The way that organizations get around that is relatively simple. You are informed of the possibility of recording and are given the chance to opt out. (Like hang up on the call, or don't get on a bus or train with a sticker at the door informing you of the a/v setup) |

The problem with doing that on a public transit vehicle is that it would be impossible to place warnings in such a place that passengers could not claim they didn’t see it. Video recording is different. The laws I referred to only apply to audio. |

Pragmatist asks for more interest on the victim. Yes, I admire the NYPD for posting clear film of the thieves' faces and only the back of the victim. In times past, some police might have discarded this as too small a case to pursue. It's highly probable that someone will identify the faces, and then its up to the Bronx D.A. Maybe others victimized by the same giggly pair will come forward. |

Any kind of notice posted by a door is easy to miss. But it seems to be the way most businesses do it. Honestly don't know what the case law is across the states, I never actually cared enough to look. |

I don't disagree with what you sensed about the tone of the thread. I was pointing out the fact that I did not make a comment that was directly attributed to me. Certainly, the video systems in use have both a prevention and apprehension value. I beleive the only comments I made were in explaining how audio as well as video can be legally used in some jurisdictions and applications. |
