DD 6V-71 is what I come up with, but not a 100% guarantee

Yes, those at NYCTA did have the DD 6V-71N engine

The ones I remember on the TA (5500's) and the Triboro Coach ones zooming down Woodhaven Blvd had a different sounding engine, even though it was a 6V71.

I think the TA buses you're referring to are actually the 5600 series. The '65 Flxibles were the 5600-5700 series, and the '64 Flxibles were 5000-5100 series. The TA's 5500 series were actually MABSTOA GMC 5303 5201-5525.

And the big question: Any '64 or '65 Flxibles (besides one in the 5000's that 'B53RICH' maintains plied the M15 First and Second Avenues line for a time) get assigned at any point in time to the Manhattan Bus Division depot at 126th Street for service on the TA's five routes in that borough? They did, in the estimation of yours truly, seem to be off-Broadway and dinner theatre roadshow compared to the 5201-5525 and 6401-6900 MaBSTOA GMC 5303's that were fixtures of Manhattan and Bronx bus routes for nearly two decades - and thus truly made it "on Broadway." Literally and figuratively (I think the M10 and M104 routes, among others).

Good question. I grew up in MABSTOA territory and while I did see some of the 126th depot action... I've never seen any of the '64 or '65 Flxibles operating there.

I presume, then, that for the most part, any '64-'65 Flxibles that plied Manhattan would have been if those buses were assigned to the B39 and B15/B51 routes . . .

If they never went to 126th St... Yes, that would be my guess too.

Let me add that with me being a youngster in the early 70s... I realize there's over a decade in which those buses could've been at 126th, in those years before I was old enough to notice, and go out exploring on my own.

I do recall seeing these buses at an early age as the elementary school I attended was near West Farms Square. I could see the Q44 buses at their old layover spot on Bryant Ave and Boston Rd from our school yard.
