Re: [PHOTOS] The JFK Express Bus To The Plane

One time returning from a vacation, I decided on taking the Q10 from the airport. Someone directed me to the PA shuttle bus which would then transfer me to the Q10 at another terminal. The shuttle I discovered was free. The only thing about the Q10 even back during the Green Bus days is there is no luggage racks, trying to keep my luggage close while the bus filled. It was also a bit difficult exiting through the crowd with my bag.

The first time I rode the JFK Express was in '82. I was in high school, and had gone to visit relatives in GA for Easter recess. On the return trip my flight into JFK was delayed and I arrived at just after 2 AM. I decided against the Q10, and E & D train home to the Bronx. I instead rode the Airline Connection bus which was an RTS-03 #5. Then, I waited in the terminal for the first JFK Express shuttle bus. I got PA1324 shortly after 5:00 AM, and rode R-46 #1244.

Those R46s were definitely the only cars that were kept graffiti-free from the start. How many times have you noticed the R38s operating on the JFK train because I have never seen them. I saw 1 picture of it.

I saw R-38s on the JFK Express just two times. I knew about it because a friend had mentioned it, but it took forever for me to finally spot them. I was guessing that it was easy enough to grab a 4-car train of R-38s as the AA and B were using them, and of course the B shared the 57th/6th north terminal with the JFK Express.

There were to be no abandonments of JFK intervals for a bad ordered or late train.

If necessary they would steal a B train, graffiti scared not withstanding.

Given how the JFK Express was kept on a pedestal of sorts... That (swiping a B train to avoid missing a trip) makes sense. Now that we're on the topic of equipment substitutions... I also recall on occasion they'd grab a regular 4-car R-46 consist. They'd operate with the "S - Special" sign reading.

I recall that during an LIRR disruption due to either a LIRR strike or Amtrak which affected the LIRR, the JFK express made regular stops along the A line and in some cases used 600 ft trains of whatever was available including some R-38s.

So there was a fence between the parking lot and the subway station even before the AirTrain? The area where the JFK Express bus connected with the subway was also separate from the parking lot (where today's AirTrain station is)?

Anyway, the bus in the photo says "Downtn Brooklyn" on the right side of the destination sign. Is that just incorrect?

It's correct, but not as a destination. The JFK Express made one Brooklyn stop at Jay Street.

Far Rock: It took me a while to locate the information but here it is. The JFK Express was based out of Jamaica Yard. It began operating on September 23, 1978 using a dedicated fleet of R-46's (1201-1242). The crackling of the HPT-2 truck frames came to the fore in 1980-81 reducing the availability of the R-46's. Substitute equipment was used an observed as follows;
6/4/80 - R-44
6/12/80 - R-38
6/26/80 - R-44
7/80 - R-42
7/17/80 - R-38
12/11/80 - R-32
12/12/80 mixed R-32 / R-38
1/81 - R-38
2/13/81 - R-10 and R-40 (two four car trains)
4/15/81 R-40 and R-44

By March of 1982 the HPT-2 trucks were replaced and the R-46 were back. This lasted until December 11, 1998 when the JFK Express fleet was assigned to Pitkin Yard. 36 R-44's were then assigned and remained until April 14, 1990 when the service was discontinued.

Most of this information comes from a serialized set of article titled :A History of the A Train" published in the NYD Bulletin and written by Mr. George Chiasson.

The March 1981 Bulletin also contains information about the use of the R-10's.

I hope this helps.

True, but if I'm heading to/from JFK as a commuter or to catch a flight... I'd rather see an old beat-up train than none (or late) at all.

I remember that. IIRC it was the closure of the Willy B for approximately one month due to structural defects back in 1988. The closure prevented the J and M trains from crossing the bridge.

In response to this the TA issued free transfers to several bus routes (ie. B26, B38, B39, B40 ,B44, B46 and B47 to name a few) that connects stations along the J and M trains to stations served by the A, C, G and L trains to enable one trip to Manhattan.

As far as the JFK train, it made all A express stops in Brooklyn and Manhattan, all 6th Ave express stops to 57th Street from 6am to 10pm Mondays-Fridays only-no extra charge. All other times it operated as normal.

The regular JFK train "commuters" were pissed because they had to "share" their train with all those Brooklyn folks-even though they didn't have to pay extra charge and had seats.

I actually heard a lady state "I want my train back."

Well I sure agree with him and add the R32s in July.

I remember when the TA placed R10s on the E and F, the passengers were so upset about it that they contacted the news and Eyewitness News actually covered it. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Right! I remember that too. Talk about a sense of entitlement.

I still recall arriving at 7th Ave (53rd) on a S/B D train and being totally shocked to see an R-10 consist arrive on the E train.
