I have had a question about electric buses and also battery operated streetcars. Could such vehicles be wired in such a way that regenerative braking can be used to assist in recharging the batteries thus adding to the mileage attainable between charges? |

That also bodes well for light rail systems that wish to operate certain segments of their lines without the clutter of overhead wires like parts of Washington DC. The cars can also recharge when operating under the wire on portions of the lines so equipped. |

If you have a vehicle with storage capacity you can do it, carrying large sets of batteries is not always practical, so in many cases sending the power back to the supply network, or in some cases picking up part of an HEP load works. It is a natural extension of dynamic braking which has been around for quite some time. The new ACS-64 on the NEC send power back, hybrid cars like the Prius or C-Max capture and store. |

The 29 & 79 worked well as trackless routes, too bad Septa did not see it that way. At least we still have at the 59, 66, & 75 as trackless, the 75 is temporary bus because of street work :( |

Septa's Customer Service has advised me that The Proterras will be delivered to the Southern District some time in 2018.Here are the answers for 2 of the 4 questions I asked them. Septa's responses are in italics. 1.Is there a GOH program scheduled for the trackless? They are almost 9 years old. There is a plan for a prototype of a New Flyer Trackless Trolley model in the Fiscal Year 2018-2029 Vehicle Overhaul Program. However details are limited and we will be getting some more information about this for you. You may be interested to learn that a Substations and Power Improvement Program is slated to begin 2018 through 2021. This plan includes an overhaul substations which serve the Route 75 and Route 59 trackless trolleys. 2.Are there plans to eventually replace the trackless fleet with Proterras? Again, we will get more details with regards to the plans for the prototype previously mentioned. South Philadelphia is still waiting for the Proterras for the 29 & 79. The Proterra fleet is scheduled for delivery sometime in 2018 to the Southern District. |
