A runaway MTA bus that travelled at least three blocks and crashed into a church left a man hospitalized and several cars damaged in its path overnight in Brooklyn, the MTA said Wednesday.

The trail of destruction left by the MTA bus will cost thousands of dollars in repairs and now bills for the victim's family.

It happened at about 12:45 a.m. when an MTA driver operating an empty Q58 bus parked on Myrtle Avenue and failed to secure the parking break, according to the MTA. Suddenly, it began to roll faster down Palmetto Street for over three blocks, striking at least six vehicles and a 27-year-old man changing a headlight in his driveway.

Witnesses say the impact threw him against a fence and onto a sidewalk.

In the meantime, the bus kept going with the driver running after it before the crash course ended at a church on Knickerbocker Avenue.

The only person hit was Nicholas Rivera, 27, whose injuries don't appear to be serious. His mother and brother spoke to PIX11 exclusively, saying Rivera was changing a headlight their car so he could drive his mother to the airport in the morning.

Eric Rivera said fortunately his brother was able to see the bus rolling toward him.

"He was doing a favor changing the lights for her [mother]," Rivera said. "We look up and see the bus flying my brother saw it at last-minute and at least he's OK."

"Thank God he's fine," the victim's mother Mayra Rosario said. "We've had a tough time with buses. If this was yesterday, we have a school here and kids with their phones. It would've been a lot worse."

Police say the driver is not in custody and the MTA is still looking into how it all happened.

Seriously?! I'd love a CDL just to hear the air noises in the breaks everytime I put something in park! How does one neglect this?

Do they have those wheel chocks in all the buses like they do(or did) on SEPTA?

Someone told me NYCTA does not use chocks. Septa uses chocks on all their buses and trolley coaches. What is a problem with Septa is drivers sometimes don't observe the slope of the hill and sometimes put the chock in the "wrong side"of the wheel.

Eventhough the union said they would assist her.....public relations. She was a probie. She is a goner.

Besides failing to apply the parking brake, all she had to do was unlock the rear door. That sets the brakes too. Now if she did, that tells me blame is 50-50. But again, since she's a probie she is 99% sure to be toast.

Money would be better spent on bus operator protective partitions than seat alarms. I'm sure there are buses out there that don't have them.

I'm sure this operator was told how to seat the brakes before leaving the vehicle.

When I thought about being a bus driver I feared this happening, getting out the seat and forgetting to pop the parking brake and have the bus rolling away. I can totally see how a noob forgetting to put it on. not to mention it was after midnight and she was probably sleepy.

Does the bus not also have a 'park' selection in the transmission control panel? You'd think that whenever you leave one of these at the top of a slope, you'd set two separate means to prevent it from rolling. It's what, 20 tons?

It's part of a warning system to alert drivers when a pedestrian or bicycle is alongside the bus.

I've started hearing "bus turning" announcements. I'm tempted to carry a loudspeaker on me with a continuous announcement: "caution pedestrian has right of way."

I guess this incident will raise the amount of money NYCT has to shell out in damages. It currently amounts to $20,000 per bus. That's double the industry average.

But pedestrians also often step out when they don't have the right of way. In any case, when in the right or not, it is probably not worth getting flattened by the back tires of the bus.

Nope. It's D-N-R. During training at NJ Transit, we were constantly reminded: "Parking Brake, Neutral." In that order. First thing you do when you stop is pop the brake.

Many lives have been saved by this young lady being drummed out of the corps early. If after 6 weeks of training and 3 weeks on the road you haven't grasped "pop the brake" what else are you likely to do? Seats alarms work sometimes, not always. And yes sometimes they are disconnected because they can't discern when an operator is using a seat cushion(like a lot of us do) and give off false alarms. I wonder how many behaviors she exhibited during training raised concerns but were brushed aside. We're all experts when it comes to rushing to the scene of an accident. But very few have the courage to prevent an obvious one from happening in the first place.
