Is the attribution to "Surface Transportation Corporation" correct? I thought these were Board of Transportation routes in 1951. Before the Board of Transportation took them over (about 1946 or 1948?), were they Comprehensive?
Thanks.

They were East Side Omnibus, then BoT. Surface Transit is not correct.

Joe: NYC BOT is correct. I was copying it from another source and didn't catch it. I will correct the original. Thanks

Besides, STS/ST routes had three numbers in their routes. But both they and ex-Comprehensive/East Side Omnibus-turned-BoT/TA routes had M- prefices, unlike the Fifth Avenue Coach and New York City Omnibus routes.

NYC Board of Transportation took over Comprehensive Omnibus and its affiliate East Side Omnibus on Sept. 22, 1948. NYC would not grant a two cent fare raise to 7 cents to the two private operators. Ironically, after the B of T takeover riders began paying 7 cents which had been the fare on all B of T buses and trolleys since July 1, 1948.

East Side Omnibus controlled the First, Second, and York Avenue lines. Comprehensive Omnibus controlled the crosstown routes on Madison-Chambers, 49th-50th, and 65th-66th Sts. All became the B of T (later TA) Manhattan Bus Division (pre-MABSTOA); drivers were TWU members.

Wasn't the name "Surface Transportation System" used rather than "Corporation" (for lines that used the Surface Transportation name)? I know in the Bronx it was, later changed to "Surface Transit Inc." (I'm not sure just when).

The Surface Transit Inc. nomenclature was adopted in 1956 upon its acquisition by New York City Omnibus Corporation, just prior to that firm becoming Fifth Avenue Coach Lines Inc. Until then, "Surface Transportation System" was on the buses (apparently referring to the "system" of routes they operated).

I also saw a Hagstrom map of Manhattan bus routes put out in 1954. I know it's that year because they refer to NYCTA bus routes (as opposed to NYC Board of Transportation or even East Side Omnibus and Comprehensive Omnibus), and by then NYCO had swallowed up FACCo whose bus routes were now referred to as "Fifth Avenue Coach Routes of New York City Omnibus Corporation" (and NYCO's 8 and 9 routes no longer were listed). But what piqued me was that as they saw it, both M-13 and M-15 were running north on First and south on Second. If so, this was evidently before M-13 was repurposed, later that year, as the Journal Building shuttle, and M-15 became the sole nomenclature for the First and Second Avenues line.

One irony, seeing a New York Times article on the changes, was that Surface Transportation Corp. was the only entity whose routes were not affected by the one-way conversions of First and Second Avenues. However, besides then-Board of Transportation's M-13 and M-15 routes (both of which, again, apparently ran up First and down Second until 1954 when M-13 was repurposed as the Journal Building line), three routes of the New York City Omnibus Corporation, and one of the Fifth Avenue Coach Company, saw modifications and adjustments to their paths:
- 15 (Fifth Avenue Coach) Fifth Avenue / Queensboro Bridge / Jackson Heights line: Northbound buses, from east on 57th Street, travel north on Lexington Avenue (I presume until 1960 when it would have been moved to Third Avenue) and then east on 59th Street to over and through the Queensboro Bridge.
- 16 (this and next two routes NYC Omnibus) 34th Street Crosstown: On First Avenue from 34th to 37th Street, then west on 37th Street, and south on Second Avenue to 34th Street.
- 19 - 96th Street Crosstown: Eastbound buses, from 96th Street, run south on Second Avenue and east on 92nd Street to York Avenue.
- 21 - Houston Street and Avenue C line: From First Avenue, west on 27th Street to Second Avenue, then south on Second Avenue and east on 23rd Street to First Avenue. (?!)

I didn’t realize the 15 used 57th Street. Would make sense as FACCO had the 57th Street franchise and Surface Transit had 59th. When was it moved? 1989?
