There's another one on the driver's side.

Their placement in the back is strange. I gotta take a ride on one of these buses and see what the set-up is.

If anyone is interested in an exhaustive study on the elimination of blind spots on transit buses, check out this study.

Now I'm thinking that maybe these cameras are meant to cover the blind spot when a bus is making a right or left turn. There have been cases where pedestrians have been run over by the turning bus.

They appear to be the RoscoVision Shield+ Technology sensors. The MTA committed to try it out during a City Council hearing. Here's a link to the company's web page.

The MTA was pushed into this by the City Council. Two interesting points. Rosco is a local company (Jamaica Queens). (N.B. the detection technology isn't local. It's MobilEye, which is an Israeli company.)

The MTA has averaged $20K per bus in annual liability awards. That's about 3 times the national average. The RoscoVision system cost per bus is less than a single year's liability awards.
