Next new order of buses for Suffolk Transit |
|
Posted by caine515 on Thu Oct 13 10:23:21 2016 I'm curious as to what Suffolk Transit new bus order be down the line. Their fleet is majority Gillig Phantom and Orion VII models with a few Orion V still remaining. They never had RTS and I don't see them getting the Gillig LF series. What else could they receive? |

So my guess would be Gillig LF or maybe the BRT.If for any reason Gillig doesn't bid or is can't, then like I said it would go to whoever is the lowest bidder. Not knowing how much the Orion VII NG had cost with the last order, I think what helped with the last Order being Orion VII's was the push the then County Executive had with buying from companies that did business with in the state. Or somewhere along the line there was that type of push, because I remember someone pointing out that while the Orion VII's were made outside the United States, or the company itself, that the final perpetration for the buses before delivery was done inside New York State. |

I'm interested in knowing as well.I'm interested in knowing how many buses he thinks the next order would be, since with the current cuts it's possible new buses aren't needed as the remaining Orion V's could be retired with some bus transfers. (Without any bus moves currently only three Orion V's would be left.) Next year the Phantoms would hit 12 years, though Suffolk has been know to keep Phantoms over the 12 year Mark. |

Do you know if they were the ones from 1960 and 1963 or the 1968 an the brought second hand that was built in 1966?They would be the oldest kept buses known so far. The second oldest would be the three 1987 Gillig Phantoms that were retired in 2005 at 18 years old. |

Fishbowl #101 (the 40 footer) and #102 (35 footer) from the early 1960's. I saw the short one on the Shelter Island North ferry one Saturday around 1983, still marked for Sunrise Coach.http://forum.bustalk.info/viewtopic.php?p=27499&sid=42e452f45991b34cf384040cd2948486 http://bustalk.info/forum/viewtopic.php?p=26461&sid=af6a19c87d36687a65fdfa68c811e347 Driver's said they did not like the 106. I don't remember the 111. |

I'll add those two to the Official Retired list for ST, since they were used after the system's creation. #101 and #102 weren't part of the retired list I was given by someone who got it though the County. Probably because they were retired early in the system's history or because they were still officially owned by Sunrise Coach. (If I remember correctly the Former Bee Line Inc bus that Alert Coach brought and used for a few years wasn't on the list either which is why I don't think the early stuff the companies used was listed) |

Most likely they would want 35 ft's but for the S1 and S92, or at least those routes for now, they may want 40ft.Though I wouldn't be so sure they would be looking at 35ft's, because not that long ago there was a rumor going around that Suffolk was going to get Cutaway's like the one's NICE and HART have. (I counted it as most likely 100% rumor as the buses were suppose to be coming from a manufacture in Connecticut. Nobody makes buses in Connecticut do they?) My guess would be if they were to buy Cutaways it would be to replace the Para Transit bus on the 7A, supposedly the S76, and for use on routes with similar load counts. |

Actually, before they folded, the Oriskany plant was ding much more than prep, as does the Plattsburgh plant for Nova and now Prevost. They were at Oriskany for Orion/Daimler and presently in Plattsburgh are major employers, and in the case of Nova, many of their suppliers opened facilities up there also.. |

It may have held things together until the Gilligs from Suffolk County and subsidies started moving in. The number 111 seems also to be a skip in sequence numbers, unless they bought some Prevosts in the interim.I remember Blue Bird Coach in western NY. In 1978, I saw a 35' Fishbowl transit bus sitting in the Erie, PA Greyhound terminal that was to depart as the daily US6 local to Scranton around 11am. By the time of Pennsylvania intercity bus deregulation abound 1982 - 83, the route was gone. They probably has some othrrs to hold down Olean area locals. Through the 1970's, the S92 was 4 buses a day, with freight compartments in the rear. Not a big people hauler. Drivers all knew how to drive a double-clutch as well. |

Sunrise Coach brought two used GM PD4106's which they numbered 109 and 110 around 1970. My guess would be that some time around then was when 111 was broght. |

Gillig has consistently won orders elsewhere in New York State. Unless they had a bad experience with ST with the Phantoms or hybrids, I don't see why they wouldn't bid on future Suffolk orders. |

I heard that either the County or EBT (I forget if it was one that was mentioned or both) isn't too happy with the Hybrids. As far as I know Suffolk hasn't had any problems with the Phantom model. Well except for maybe the cracks, that were said to have developed on the frame of 9650 and 9652 before their retirement. |
