Bankruptcy of 7Bus on Long Island

Posted by Joe on Tue Sep 6 19:14:49 2016

edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr

The Newsday website as of evening 9.6.2016 has a disturbing story of a shutdown of some coach services on Long Island, through business failure. Involved are 7Bus, Hampton Luxury Liner, and Classic Coach of Bohemia. Bill Schoolman is pictured as CEO. Fifty-three employees were told to stay home. The fleet is 27 buses. This shut-down is not new news, as earlier this year the firms filed for bankruptcy.

This is not Hampton Jitney.

How long has Classic Coach been around ?

Sounds like Coram Bus Service and Harran all over again.

I'm sure that HartBus on BusTalk could answer the question about Classic Coach. I would say "For decades." Thirty years or so ago, we used their route service to get to an airport. In more recent years, Classic regularly picked up gamblers at a candy store in North Wantagh.

What charter companies are left besides Hampton Jitney on LI ?

Used to be every little school bus outfit once had 2 or 3 Fishbowl-Suburbans or Parlors for charter work.

I'm not sure if Horizon Coach in Bellport is still around.

There is NorthFork Express, which is a related company to the school Bus firms Montauk Bus Service and East End Bus Lines.

I also think Alert Coach Lines is still around.

Other then those, I believe there are only small unknown companies.

Something isn't adding up.

According to the WARN act filed back in July buy Schoolman Transportation AKA Classic Coach, the company was going to shut down on the 26th of this month. Yet the article made it sound like they had planed on still being in operation.

NFX is the main one, but there's a few others:

His and Hers (Bellport also?)
McCarney Tours (Wading River)
Brownin (officed in Valley Stream but garaged in Queens)
M&V Limo I believe still has buses (multiple locations on LI)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Designer Limo (Port Washington and then Uniondale) stopped operating in Dec 2013.

The only one of those I've heard of before was McCarney Tours. Not sure where they keep their buses though. The address for Wading River is a mailing address for a Residential house.

A address giving for Medford is shared with Winston Airport Shuttle, and is shown either to be next door or near to East End Bus Lines.

Schoolman used the Schoolman Transportation System name twice.

Based on what you said I assume that the Original Schoolman Transportation System was what he ran the Limos under. It was started in 1982 and then in 1985 it's named changed to Schoolman Transportation Syatems of New York. It became inactice accoding to the state at the end of 2004.

The Second Schoolman Transportation Syatems, which I believe is Classic Coach was created in 1985, a few months after the first Schoolman Transportation Systems was renamed.

That would make sense. My brother-in-law was married in 1983 and had a limo from Schoolman. It was the first time my (then) seven year old had ever ridden in a limo. He was impressed that there was a TV in the car. The limo was stopped under an overpass. He asked the driver very politely if he could move up a little so that "I can see Arnold" (Gary Coleman)

Thanks Hound. That is basically across the street from Alert Coach.

I've been wondering where they had there buses since I saw a Google Streetview for the address Google given for Medford, which is where Winston Airport Service is, which showed that a company called Shamus Coach had buses there. (I assume Winston Airport either leases the space, or owns it but leases out the rest of the property)

Hampton Express has been out of business for along time. Unless there is another company with that name, it was a company that was owned by the Mensch family which now owns North Fork Express along with the Montauk Bus school bus empire and East End Bus Lines.

Hampton Express bus yard was in Center Moriches which was taken over by Laidlaw in around 1995. Then it went to First Student when they brought Laidlaw. First Student abandoned it this year after losing two contracts to the Mensch's school bus companies.

That I don't know that either. I would assume that they lost their School Bus Contract to Laidlaw in the early 90's, around the time that the County cut the S66 in 1989/1990.

The old Baumman and Sons yard. I was wondering what they were using that for since a few sattalite maps showed a lack of school buses there.

Ah the Union must not be up to date. They were the ones that listed them at the other address.

Also McCarney was probably at the Medford Location up to at least 2008, because the Google street view for 2008 shows one of their coach buses leaving the 1 Manor Road location.

A article from yesterday's Newsday, Schoolman says that he has been in business since 1976.

Heres the article Hampton Luxury Liner, 7Bus, Classic Coach to close

Also in the article Schoolman says how the employees received layoff notices in June and that the layoffs would have happened on the 26th.

Also he mortgaged his house 17 times to to keep the companies going. I'm surprised he was allowed to mortgage his house that many times.

If I figured it right, the Baumann's inherited the old Camp Baumann property when they took over some of Atlantic Express's contracts at the Oceanside yard.

I only said that about North Fork Express because I once read where they had bid on the the team bus from the Newark Bears (an Independent Baseball team who played in the Atlantic League an then moved to the Can-Am league) after the team went bankrupt an folded back in 2013.

When I read about the games that were being played regarding financing, I felt it.

Nobody is perfect. However, I think parts of this bankruptcy docket is required bus business reading. There is a financial underworld of exploitation that will asset strip you to your undies without killing you. However, what I learned from people who did the same to me is that sometimes, it is better to take the loss than to feed these people. I looked back at my 23 year old self and realized that the only reason I didn't kill those guys was because God wouldn't let me do it.

Camp Baumann was bought by Atlantic Express back in 1987. Camp B was owned by Bob And Roz Baumann. Baumann and sons was owned by a different branch of the family. They had a fallen out back in the day and never had a anything to do with each other. This is first hand information as I worked there from 1984 till 1988.

They used to do my school Hewlett-Woodmere contact, though in the late 1970's that went to Veteran's in Hewlett, whose bus yard was once Brother's in the 1960's, and they moved to Lawrence.

Veteran's yard is in Valley Stream. Independent Coach is in Hewlett and Lawrence. Independent got the contract for Hewlett after Camp lost it.
