The plan has been scrapped.

"The original Hybrid (hype~shit) plan was to repower hybrid buses with diesel engines, however, after an evaluation of the full cost of the conversions, it was determined that these funds would be better utilized to support the following Hybrid bus programs: provision for an extended warranty on PCS components with the vendor; replacement of traction motors and generators based on three-year average failure rates; replacement of hybrid batteries based on the latest schedule with the vendor; replacement of engines in their midlife; and replacement of injectors in years two and four after engine replacements."

#3563 - remains the oddball bus.

This is why hybrid buses are not practical from a maintenance standpoint. Just too expensive to maintain. Plus I doubt if they can squeeze 15+ years out of some like you can do to a diesel.

Actually the 15 year issue is more about the frame rotting out.

The Orion VII (and Novas) was designed with a stainless steel frame to prevent corrosion and the frame has a minimum 18 year design life. Buses like the Orion V and New Flyers use mild steel which even with protective coatings are still prone to corrosion/rot after being on the road for years.

It would have been better to have stuck with clean diesels tech.
Todays diesel engines are just as good,if not better than the hybrid tech used on the older models..

Most likey, this is PART OF the reasoning behind the MTAs decision to continue purchasing clean diesel buses.

There was more money available at the time to be a "guinea pig" for hybrids.

Yeah..and a certain governor wanted upstate workers to get a large part,of that money, too.
Thats why Orion got that contract for those crappy buses.

And the company that produced the hybrid drive selected has a large presence in Binghamton/Johnson City Area.
