You say 'we need a balanced transportation policy'. The report says "Design streets to prioritize buses." How could you say "The report only fails in one area."? Are you not going to fight the premise of the report that specifically suggests prioritizing buses over cars through the redesign of streets including dedicated lanes, more camera enforcement, and creating bus queue jumps? |

I was never against prioritizing buses over cars WHERE WARRANTED. I am also not against more camera enforcement for bus lanes.I opposed exclusive lanes on Woodhaven because they are not warranted there and will cause too much inconvenience for other vehicles which account for the huge majority of traffic there. I do not oppose exclusive lanes on Livingston Street where it is warranted but not enforced. I also had no problem with the exclusive lanes on Nostrand and Rogers if it was done properly by also changing parking regulations on parallel streets between Empire and on Eastern Parkway during rush hours to minimize the traffic impact. But it wasn't done correctly. The additional rush hour curb lane for traffic was not enforced creating traffic backups and no traffic changes were made on parallel roadways so traffic there was also negatively impacted according to the Progress Report. And you don't put in a bus lane between midnight and six AM when buses are operating every 30 minutes which is what is being proposed for Woodhaven. So if the report means put bus lanes on any street where buses operate ignoring the needs of all other vehicles, then I would have a problem with that. I am hoping that is not what they mean, just as they recommend more SBS routes, I hope they don't mean turning most routes into SBS. I am assuming that all their recommendations are for specific situations, and each recommendation will not be deployed everywhere because that makes no sense. |
