Steinway Transit Express TTs - 1976

If you thought that the TA's 1965 TTs were cheaply printed, you have to see Steinway Transit's Express TTs dated 1/2/76 along with the lists of stops. The handouts at the time were copies of copies of copies which were sometimes crooked. Although you can't tell on this post, the schedule portion was 6"x6" while the stops list was 8.5" x 7.5." A few years later Steinway (and Queens Transit) much improved on what they provided - stay tuned.

Thanks for posting! Wow! These are horrible. See the arrow in the last scan!
What did the companies expect people to do without the timetable for regular bus routes?

Wow, very interesting to see such a headway for the QM1/QM5 middays. Right now, only the QM5 serves all of Fresh Meadows, on 30-60 minute headways, when before each had 20 minute headways during middays (10 minute combined)

Nice, can't wait to see the rest.

Less than eight years after printing the poor quality information that we previously saw, in November 1983 Steinway Transit got professional and provided a map showing stops (really a diagram - geography is only suggested), timetables and fare information in one handy folder.

Now they run nearly empty buses much later into the evening and on Saturdays and Sundays on most of the routes. Morning runs in and afternoons out get decent utilization, but watching empty buses go in and out of the city in the late hours or on Sundays is sad.

"did Steinway transit name their routes?"

They were named before the buses carried the QM numbers. Interestingly, Fresh Meadow, rather than Fresh Meadows, often (not always) appeared on the buses and the timetables for many years.

"Do you have anything about the QM4 via Jewel?"

Yes, Queens Transit printed a similar folder and I'll scan and post that soon enough.

Well I agree these are poorly printed but honestly I'd say there's enough information there to know the schedule and be able to reasonably predict when your bus was supposed to get to your stop. Even now with extra time points I'm still inclined to get to an express bus stop at or around the time it leaves its origin just to be on the safe side. Often the express bus is very early or very late too.

There's a fare disparity between the first and second pages. I wonder what that's about?

Also, more a nitpick but still something to note: for the U.T. bus stop list: 247th St is NOT between 260th St and Little Neck Parkway.

There's a nice charm to that. Someone I know who has lived in Park Slope for decades refers to "the Fifth" and "the Seventh" when referencing the B63 and B67 respectively.

And I do sort of miss the "Manhattan - All Stops" sign on some of the private bus lines when it really didn't matter to anyone what their point of origin was.

Meanwhile QSC liked to announce its origin for some reason on the destination sign "GLEN OAKS TO. . .6 AV"

I agree. It was a nice touch. It was an express, and you had the destination there. Back in the destination curtain era, I didn't like the TCC express readings where they'd have the word "EXPRESS" followed by the route number and destination. I always thought it made for an overcrowded sign reading.

Not sure of the date of this flyer but the Queens/Steinway Transit merger was effective on July 1, 1986, according to Motor Coach Age.

Even back then, the QM3 had drop-off stops that didn't correspond with pick-up stops.

Also, look at how much service it had. Now it's only 3 trips each way.

I guess one-directional stops have always been deemed useful. There's little reason not to have them if the bus is going to go by there anyway. And if it's served by a local bus then you are not eliminating parking.

If I was the 5-day a week round trip rush hour rider though I don't think I would regularly use the express bus without an express bus unlimited and I don't think I'd get an express bus unlimited if my stop was only served in one direction.

The QM3 took the L.I.E. inbound to the QM Tunnel and return via 59 St Bridge then Northern Blvd. That's why it's only a drop off along Northern. The QM3 tried to compete with the LIRR Port Wahington Branch, but most passengers preferred the train.

A good example would on the QM4 be where Jewel Ave and 69th in Forest Hills take traffic in and outbound. Since they are one way, from Queens Blvd until the merge at Park Drive East back into Jewel the stops must be different. or inbound at 164t and Jewel the bus turns and stops on Jewel, coming home it makes the left and stops on 164th. They look different on a schedule, but they make sense. The express bus fares were much more competitive in the era of the 2 fare zone. Now its more than double the regular fare because the transfer bus to subway isn't charged, and the Express bus fare was decoupled.

But at least there's an equivalent stop each way, like on Horace Harding when the stops are on different sides of the expressway.

On the QM3, there is no inbound equivalent for 72nd St et. al.

The BxM3 starts at Yonkers / Getty Square. Does anyone know if it competes with Amtrak / Metro North? (A side question is why the BxM3 gets to service Westchester. I must say it is quite odd to see out of service MTA buses regularly on Yonkers Ave). Too bad the QM3 couldn't go into Nassau a bit.

The Yonkers Depot is a few blocks over, by the Hudson River. (See here: https://goo.gl/mzxxt2 )

It gets very little ridership north of the Westchester border. Most people along Broadway are taking the Bee Line buses over to the (1) or (4) trains (conveniently, the 1/2/3 go to the (1) train, and the 4 goes to the (4) train)

The oldest express schedule that I have for other Queens privates is from 1989 covering Triboro Coach routes QM-10, 11 and 12.

Queens Surface Corp. express routes - 1990

From 1983 we’ll roll past the 1986 merger of Queens/Steinway Transit, the 1988 sale to Linden Bus which quickly became Queens Surface Corp., which soon got permission to drop the QM-3 and Wall Street runs that Caravan Bus picked up and later returned in early 1990.

The c. 1990 map below is a combination of the earlier Steinway and Queens Transit ones and still omits route numbers while the separate September 1990 timetable includes them.

How long did the Wall St runs just go to/from 188th / Chevy Chase? When I first started following QSC routes in the 2000s I'm pretty sure most or all Downtown runs had an outer destination (beyond 188th). I know you would be given a transfer of some kind as you exited at Chevy Chase to keep going on another route.

Was it a Saint Patrick's Day special?

Also, does anyone have photos of Caravan doing their QM routes?
