Just heard that Suffolk Transit will be using a smaller fuel efficient on the S76 starting Mon. Oct. 19th.

I wonder if they got a new type of bus or if they are using SCAT buses. Also wonder if this is being down as a way to try and save money to advoid cutting lines.

It probably is..or maybe the S76 doesn't get enough riders for a large bus. Hopefully it isn't a short bus.

I don't think the S76 gets that much riders. The one time I rode it back in it's early days there was less then half a dozen people on it. And they used an Orion V on it back then.

To me it sounds like they are planing to use something like a Para Transit bus, since if I remember correctly the fuel they use now is suppose to be rfficient, unless they mean they are going to be running an Orion VII on the route. Currently they use an 2005 Gillig Phantom.

Sound like it will be SCAT buses. Also it sounds like the 5A and 7D/E maybe getting SCAT buses as well in the future.

NICE ought to use the concept for the routes they want to kill.

Cutting routes are still on the table for Suffolk. Rumor has it that they are considering possibly cutting runs. My guess this is a test to see if they can cut costs.

Heard on the 7D/E only has 20 riders all day. Never really understood why they never combined those routes into one.

Piloting with the 7DE is interesting - as of January 2012, there's a ton of "full time" (excluding the S31 and S69) routes have fewer riders:

For context, the S76 carried 1661 and the 7DE carried 3469 in the month.

10DE - 273
10A - 635
S35 - 918
S90 - 971
1B - 1086
10C - 1171
S110 - 1370
S76 - 1661
5A - 1771

10B - 1772
1A - 2329
7A - 2602
7B - 3279
7DE - 3469

So if calculations are correct for the 10D/10E, each trip has just a bit more than one rider (The 10D trips I counted a round trip as one trip since there's no layover). Shouldn't they just eliminate that route. I know some routes exist for coverage reasons, but serious, if it's THAT low, then they should just can the route.

They aren't piloting with the 7D/E. They are piolting with the S76. The 7D/E would be one of the next to get it.

They seem to be going based on the number of riders for the whole day not the whole year. From what I've been told the 7D/E get 20 riders per day. I know the one time I rode the 7D there weren't that many on it for that run. And the one time I took the 7E it was just me and one other person and we didn't ride that far.

SCT to use smaller fuel efficient bus (Has started)

Heard today that yesterday Suffolk put SCAT bus #2948 on the 7A. So it seems that the use of SCAT buses instead of regular Transit buses may have started.

Seems that HART is doing a similar thing by using the new Airporter type vehicles instead of full sized buses.

Must be a cost cutting move due to low ridership.

The County's move is more because of a budget problem then low ridership, they just happen to be making the changes on the low ridership routes. It's better then having the routes straight out cut.

Odd thing is that the 7A is suppose to have an 30ft bus assigned but it didn't always seem to get it. Heard for the last week it had a 35ft Gillig assigned.

In Somerset COunty, NJ, there are 7 or 8 standard buses (Millenium Transit, Blue Bird, El Dorado). The rest of the fleet for stand-ins of these and Para-transit are various shapes and sizes of "truck buses". There are only 10 or so drivers out of 100 that are "air brake certified" that can drive the real buses.
