Im been thinking nostalgically about the Gillig Phantom buses that MSBA(then LIBUS,now NICE) had in service. I'm guessing they were retired around the time the Orion V CNG buses came into service. But im wondering why the ones in Suffolk Transit still stayed in service when MSBA didn't keep them as a reserve fleet??

Are you talking about Suffolk Transit's 1987 Gillig Phantoms or all their Phantoms in general?

Suffolk seems to replace buses their bus at the 12 year mark or at 500,000 miles or when they have the money to do so. The latter most likely the reason why the last orders of Phantoms before the 2005's lasted 14. Though I could be wrong.

Only the low numbers 500,515 were 35ft. 520 and higher look to be 40ft.

Not sure about the 35 footers, but I remember by 1996ish that at least some of the 40 footers had digital signs.

These were my favorite buses and they lasted longet than the grummans. I always rode the N31/N32 and they never got assigned to these lines? Were the Gilligs assigned specific routes or they could be found anywhere they were needed?

Not true. When they first came out they were on the N31/32 albeit a short time. Around the time the Orion Vs arrived they disappeared. After that I never saw them again on those lines.

I remember riding these, with MegaMax signs on the N91 (JFK Flyer) in 2000. Thanks for the pics, and the memories.

On the N73, most streets were well-paved when the Gilligs ran between Hicksville and Wantagh. However, as I rode them, the wheels, chassis, and hard plastic seats transmitted bumps and shocks from the pavement to my back. They rode rough. They looked nice, but were very uncomfortable.

I recall when they arrived, driven, I believe, from Hayward, California. Maybe they caught earthquakes there.

They had different suspensions in the rear. I think it was called Leland suspension. The U-bolts were always breaking. Also 549 in the pics must have been after we rehabbed them because it says MTA on the front. Great pics! Thanks for the memories
