CT Fastrak Opens

The CT Fastrak busway between New Britain and Hartford opened on Saturday, March 28th. Despite steady snow showers throughout the day, many people came out to ride the buses, which will be free until April 5th. A variety of equipment is being used to operate the service, which includes a shuttle service along the busway, through local and commuter services and circulator routes to nearby traffic generators. Here are some pictures from the first day of operation.

Thank you for the photos! Looks nicer than Miami-Dade's! Is this the closest of its kind to NYC?

Our newest livery in Miami is one of the best. Remember CT Fastrak livery is a branding for that busway.

Question: what's the procedure when a given route leaves the guideway? Are there fare machines at every stop for ticket-purchase, even on the local streets?

Bill: Thank you for the pictures and the information. Its look like I will have to detour through Hartford on my next trip to Warehouse Point.

A bus is a bus is a bus. Now build a real "trak" on it and make it light rail. That would be fast.

Thank you! The system connects to Amtrak at Hartford Union Station. There is also a commuter bus route which operates on the busway, connecting with Metro North at Waterbury.

It seems that the primary purpose at this time is to funnel people into downtown Hartford. Some Fastrak routes extend beyond the busway to serve traffic generators that are near, but not directly along the route. Officials are also hoping that there will be new transit oriented development around many of the stations.

Buses are equipped with fareboxes. The ticket machines are used only along the busway, but there are plans to expand their use to other areas.

The buses travel up to 45 mph on the busway, which is often faster than what they could do on I-84 at rush hour. There is also flexibility for the buses to continue routes beyond the busway.

Holy crap, $70 million/mile for that? Boondoggle doesn't even begin to describe waste at that level. Even NJT could have built a 65mph light rail line for less money.

But how will they differentiate between someone who used the farebox and someone who requires POP? Does the farebox give POP?

I found this information on the CT Transit website:

"CT Fastrak buses travel on routes both on and off of the bus-only roadway. If you are boarding a CT Fastrak bus at a stop that does not have a TVM:

You must board the bus at the front door and use the farebox or show your valid ticket, pass, or transfer as you would on any CT Transit bus. If you board and pay cash, you will be issued a 2-Hour pass to show the Fare Inspector as proof of payment."

This would be quite convenient for NYC SBS segments near the ends of runs where people get on with longer trips who could most benefit from SBS but don't live near a SBS stop. It's basically on-board validation. A good way to add SBS stops without building expensive curbside machines.
