Circumvent Manhattan

Using only public bus, rail, and ferry service, what is the fastest way to circle Manhattan? Circling Manhattan is defined as beginning and ending in the same spot (say, Hoboken, but it could be elsewhere), having formed a full loop around Manhattan without once entering it.

It must be public transit, and not a private tour of any kind (i.e. no Circle Line Cruise, cab/taxi service, private automobile, etc.)

If you establish a route, or find it too difficult to do so, you can try an easier one, which pretends that the GWB and all points north are outside Manhattan and therefore fair game.

The schedule timing would have to be worked out, but one route would be this:

Start at Hoboken train station.
NJT Main/Bergen Line to Suffern.
TZX to White Plains Trans Center
Bee-Line 3 to Bronx/242nd Street
Bx9 to Boston and Tremont
Q44 to Jamaica Station
Q24 to Broadway Junction
B25 to Fulton and Flatbush
B63 to 86th street
S53 to Castleton and Broadway
S46 to Morningstar
S89 to Bayonne/HBLR
HBLR to Hoboken

I suppose that would be good, if there was an added restriction against using any New York rail services.

There are a lot of variations to this challenge. . .if you add or take away certain restrictions.

One could certainly replace some of the buses with Metro North and subways, but since this was posed on BusChat, I figured I'd do plenty of bus.

It seems like it would have to involve the S89 for one leg of the trip, since being immediately west of Manhattan means you're in NJ, and the only way to get from NJ to Staten Island (which is the only way to complete the southern portion of the loop, since there's no direct NJ-Brooklyn service) is to take the S89.

Alright, so treating the GWB as being outside Manhattan, we can start at the GWB and do as follows:

Bx36 to West Farms
Q44 to Jamaica
(J) train to Broadway Junction
(A) train to Jay Street
(R) train to 86th Street
S79 to Eltingville Transit Center
S89 to Bayonne
HBLR to Bergenline Avenue (transfer at Pavonia/Newport)
#181 to GWB

I'll try the Hoboken one again:
Main/Bergen County Line to Suffern
TZX to White Plains
#60 to New Rochelle
#45 to PBP
Q50 to Flushing
(7) train to QBP
B62 to MetroTech
(R) train to 86th Street
S53 to Victory Blvd
S62/92 to Richmond Avenue
S89 to Bayonne
HBLR to Hoboken

Now a really long one for fun:
Start at Long Beach
N33 to Far Rockaway
Q22 to Beach 169th Street
Q35 to Avenue U
B3 to 86th Street
B1 to 4th Avenue
S53 to Forest Avenue
S48/98 to Richmond Avenue
S89 to Bayonne
HBLR to Hoboken
Main/Bergen County Line to Suffern
TZX to White Plains
#20/21 to Bedford Park
Bx26 to White Plains Road
Bx39 to Parkchester
Q44 to Jamaica
N4 to Lynbrook
N15 to Long Beach

The single constraint is the S89 on this itinerary.

You're also limited to the Q44 or Q50 that use the Whitestone. RFK-Triboro touches Manhattan (Randall's Island), and no buses use the Throg.

Plus, the only local bus over the RFK-Triboro is the M60 anyway, which would require a transfer in Manhattan.

Short Line and Adirondack Trailways use the Throgs Neck Bridge on their routes from Long Island to upstate. There are intermediate stops in Westchester and Rockland.
