Harlem is now home to the nation’s first green bus depot.

The Mother Clara Bus Depot on Lenox Ave. and 146th St. now features 65,000 square feet of greenery on its roof and other environmentally friendly features.

“We have set the standard,” said Charles Callaway, a community activist who led the charge for the change.

The MTA-owned bus depot shuttered in 2008 to undergo a $250 million makeover, which included the installation of solar panels and thermal insulation.

The Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot will reopen in November as the nation's first green bus station equipped with solar panels, mosaic art, hybrid buses and 65,000 square-feet of greenery on its roof.

There is no set date for its opening, according to the MTA. The depot will accommodate 150 buses — many of which will be hybrid-electric vehicles. All of the buses will use ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.

The depot replaced an old trolley barn in 1939. It was rehabilitated in 1990 and later renamed in honor of Mother Clara McBride Hale.

“Bus depots can make an impact on peoples’ lives,” said Callaway, of the West Harlem Environmental Action, Inc.
