The Jamaica Bus ones were that bad? You would think it'll be good since it came from Jamaica Bus. Of course GBL must've turned them to crap once getting them. This image on the site I took it from said the picture was from October 1990. I can tell either they just didn't feel like painting the door or they just had to replace them with newer ones. They either didn't last too long or GBL just scrapped them early on purpose.

If that was '90 they had a couple more years left then. I don't recall them being too too bad. They were fast and their own unique sound. I remember the cushions coming off the seat bottoms often. The only time I was broken down on a bus was on one of those 3xx-1s. Came off the Marine Park Bridge, made the stop and when we went to take off again it stalled out. We were there until the next one showed up. What website is that pic from?

It was on Flickr for a few weeks but then someone uploaded it to the bustalk gallery last week.

I also seen some recently uploaded photos of GBL Fishbowls near their end years and RTS-03s in the early 1990s on the bustalk GBL Historical Roster. Those were apparently from ebay so they have small text over them.

Link the fishbowls if you can. I know from riding to school and back in the early 1990's those 1979 RTS buses from Triboro and Jamaica were on the road until 1992 or 1993 as Green Lines. The Green Lines own '79s buses lasted past then until the DOT ordered them off the road. I don't remember for sure but the Triboro and Jamaica 03s only were painted with the single wide dark green stripe like 307-1 in that picture.

It would be interesting to see a fishbowl roster from 1991 or so for the Green Lines. Most of the fishbowls were borrowed from Triboro and a couple from Jamaica. 916 (1964 GM), 951,953,959 (1967 GM) and 970,973,975 (1968 GM) 614-1 (1974 GM) borrowed from Triboro Maybe the next year those 1976 TCC buses showed up. 906-1 and 913-1 were from Jamaica (1970 GM). A couple years later Green Line had some fishbowls from Jamaica which were '76 models but were nasty. The only original Green Line fishbowls I recall were 116 and 118 (1968 GM) and 311 (1976 GM). Maybe I named them all?

I'm not certain but I'd say 355-364 were gone in 1993. In 1990 everyone one of them was on the road and I rode each one. The ones that were still 8 cylinders were quite fast. They all had different paint schemes going as well. Maybe 357 kept the original livery. They got a good deal of use. I don't think they lasted into 1994 though. The sure could whip around Flatbush Ave traffic though.

I was fortunate enough to buy the ID plate for bus 361 from a collector. According to the October-December issue of Motor Coach Age written by the late Alan Bromberger (may he rest in peace), buses 350-364 were delivered in 1979 built by GM Canada. So its logical to assume that they didn't make into 1994 when they would have been 15 years old.

Those 10 buses were GMD T8H-5307A's with serial #'s between M026 - M040 and seated 52 passengers.

I realize that there is a discrepancy between the fleet #'s (10) and the VIN #'s (15).

I checked a production listed I once printed out about GMD but that only went back to Sept. 1981

Not sure, but TCC #743 was given or sold to the NYPD as (IIRC) unit 3301 and assigned to Highway District #3 on the GCP near Francis Lewis Blvd. It was in residence there until just before 9/11/01 when is was sold to a Hassidic Bus Company from Brooklyn bringing employees to their jobs in Manhattan.

That's pretty cool that you have the plate from 361. I recall it being quite a workhorse but I'm not certain it was 8 cylinder in its later years. I'm not an expert but from recollection I believe the new buses ordered in '93 or '94 knocked almost all of the new look buses GBL was running out there at the time. Buses like that 971-1 were the last I know of in 1994 and they were 1976 models correct?

Also, do you know when the 550-589 Grummans that GBL had were put out of service? All I know is that Queens Surface had them til 1994, Some of Triboro Grummans went to GBL in 1991 with no added -1 according to roster and Jamaica Bus had theirs until the same time that Green Lines got rid of their 1979 RTS-03's 1001-1015 in 2000.

Also, maybe the Green 1979 GMDD 355-364 fishbowls were last ran in the main GBL lines like Q6, Q8, etc. 361 is shown to last run on the Q9 from the picture. The Triboro 604-1 also last ran on Q37, another main GBL line. That's where the picture is taken, in the Jamaica area GBL scrap yard. I wonder if GBL also sent their service buses to get repaired their because then what would that RTS-03 that looks like their own be doing there? The only RTS-03 that was gone early was 1002 but it's unknown whether that got the final paint job. All others did and actually, 1010 and 1015 were the last to be repainted to this paint job in 1999. I do seem to remember seeing very few RTS-03's around this time with 1 Green stripe and thinking that it looked weird. That end of a number sure looks like a 1.

As far as the RTS next to 604-1, how do you get a 1 on the end of the number? I see what appears to be a piece of something but not clearly a 1.

I don't know about the Grumman buses. I only recall them being around in the 80's. I should say I'm from Rockaway and the only lines I was regularly were the 35 & 22. There were no Grummans from 1990 onward on either of those lines that I ever saw. They used many from the 100-1015 group, some fishbowls, the 1985 2xx buses and a few 6xx buses from 1986. Plus the borrowed 1979 RTSs. All those RTS buses smelled like piss in the back by the way. Fishbowls didn't.

I hear that the MCI Buses never went to Rockaway until Orions came in 1997. The TMC RTS-06s neither. Only the 1 door MCI's did for the express routes in that area. That side apparently never got new buses. I did see a picture of 1004 doing the Q35 in 1979-1980 so it still had the Slant Back. I don't like the slant back design. Green Lines also had a cheap paint scheme on their RTS-03s at first I see. I seen an image of 1005 doing Q35 in 1989 and it had square AC and thicker stripe. It was pretty dirty though. I don't know when the RTS-03s were converted and repaired.

The Bee Line RTS-03's I seen images of had a smaller AC unit (than what was on all the other RTS-03's GBL had) that looked like it was just tacked onto the slant and you can still see that there was a slant. I heard that 1002 had one but I don't know. It was scrapped early though but I'm not sure when.

Oh, thanks for the other info anyway. I seen yesterday on the nyctransitforums a thread about NYCDOT Company GMC RTS-03s that someone said 1002 did have a smaller AC Unit that didn't reach to the full width on each side similar to Westchester County Bee Line RTS-03s.

Queens Surface had some numbered 193-204 that looked similar to the other Green Lines RTS-03s. They also borrowed some ex-Bee Line RTS-03s for a while in 1998 before getting their CNG Orion's. On an image there you can see the smaller AC on them. 1002 was gone before 1998 according to an old roster I found from April 1998, just 1001, 1003-1015 and they mislabeled as GMC RTS-02s. No Fishbowls as well. The Orion's were brand new.

Maybe that AC Unit is what made 1002 go so early? It was put long before the other RTS-03s. 1001, 1003-1015 got their AC maybe when the Jamaica Bus ones came in 1988. There are no images at all of 1002, even when it was new. They still had the double sided Destination signs in 1989 as seen on the image of 1005. Maybe by the early 90s they put the 1 regular, long destination sign.

I seen an image of 1012 with 1 big stripe like 307-1 but still the final GBL Logo on the front and the 1 long regular destination sign. Taken in the early 90s by same seller as some of the fishbowl pics like 916, 976-1. 1012 looked clean on the outside. It probably ran well so that's why GBL kept it til the end in 2006, I don't see it on Google maps anymore at the Command Storage Yard, I last seen it there in 2011. 1003, 1005, 1006, 1009, 1013 & 1015 were also still around but went to NIMCO in 2006.

I believe that the "add-on" unit were made by a company known as SuTrac (or something similar). When I stopped by Commercial Drivers Institute in Wen ex-st Babylon, NY, they had a Bee-Line coach and you could clearly see that it was narrower.

Those were ex-Bridgeport, CT. There were also Queens Transit #1 and Steinway Transit #2; I don't know when they were retired.

The previously mentioned MCA article about QSC and all predecessors shows those buses on the roster, but no listings about the dispositions of any buses in the fleets.

It should have been the Museum Bus rather than 10001 and if they wanted to save a PBL GMC RTS-04, they should've saved one from Jamaica Bus instead of an ex-Queens Surface TMC RTS 3865.

I think I saw on some plain oocities Buses sold list that they went to NIMCO. It said GL 1003, GL 1009, GL 1015, etc. On some other site it said they went to Nimco as well.

Family worked for GBL. They did not go to NIMCO. CXT would have towed them to NIMCO, as was the case for the 1985-86 GMC RTS's that were replaced by the ex-NYCT RTS's, numbered by GBL 1101-1111. CXT did not tow these buses out of Rockaway. I have to look for the picture of them being towed, I think I have one.
