RTS Bus 200. 1979??

I recently came upon a photo in nyc subway.org of an RTS bus # 200 taken back in 1979. It was in front of Kings Plaza and it said #41 on it. It looked like the back was slanted like the older RTS model.
I do not remember this model @ NYCTA. I do remember it in Westchester. The first RTS I remember in NYCTA was a straight back, it was 1981 and I saw it in Midtown. WHat is this bus #200??

A few of the privates took a small number of the slant-backs, they later got the conversion kit that "squared them off" If I remember, that helped the cooling quite a bit.

Flatbush got their RTSs on monday 8/3/81 they were put into service late thursday morning on 8/6/81 they were put on the short lines except B42 because they were afraid of the swinging gates hitting the fiberglass panels. I worked run 8 on 17 that morning and pulled out bus 1223. My buddy billy pulled 1222 with 9 on 17. The looks we got were unbeliveable we enjoyed them on both half our runs on friday. Some difference from driving new look gms and flexibles.200 if remember was only on the B41 during daylight hours weekdays only

I remember riding that bus. It was quite exciting for me to see it going down Flatbush Avenue. First RTS I've seen in the flesh. A few days later I waited...and waited for it. I recall riding it on a Sunday, which contradicts what Retired SLD said. It was like something that landed from outer space.

Queens Transit got a bunch of Canadian GM built 102" fishbowls (before the Classics) for their express runs. Back then almost everything was still 96" Three inches on a side doesn't seem like a lot, but those first few tips up 6th ave were interesting.

Although they were 35 footers, the RTSs for Westchester's operations at that time were slant back and 96 inches. They later received the squared off conversion at the rear and new opening windows.
Fun times.

Westchester had 40's too. The conversion was to add a seperate A/C condensor, as the RTS was designed with the condensor & radiator together like an auto. Turns out the condensor wasn't strong enough to cool a bus and made radiator work very involved let alone keeping both of them clean.

I think we all agree that the conversion made the RTS a much better bus. I seem to remember something funny about the front axle in the early ones, if you could jog the cobwebs out of my mind, that would be great.

The early RTS had upper and lower control arms for an independent front suspension. The RTS-06 had a front axle beam.

Personal opinion - I drove both and prefer the independent front over the straight axle.

NP, feel the same way about the RTS and fishbowl. rode them enjoyed them and thought they'd be here forever. I am happy to own a fishbowl and I drove RTS' (hope to own one soon). Now I just drive the D4500, maybe I'll feel the same as they fade away, but that's not for a decade or so. Funny I think back and there were a couple generations of B/O's that only knew new look's and even the RTS. Now here IMO there is nothing worth even talking about.

Figures the MTA would get a bus to demo w/ no balls. Look at the last MCI's we could get the Cummins ISL or ISX, lets get the ISL you know the one we put in transit buses, genius. Hey were gonna get MCI's we could get the 11.1 or the 12.7 DD S60, Eureka! Get the 11.1. THe only one they got right powerwise only b/c it really was a DOT order was getting the twin turbo C13 CAT. Don't forget the 96" 870's that were for Ave B w/ the 8V71.

Literally - Queens Transit had #1 and Steinway Transit had #2. Then they bought GMDD Fishbowls. Queens Surface would get more slopebacks in the 1990s (already with the backpacks) from Bridgeport and Westchester.

If only the Wayback Machine saved everything. I find old GBL galleries supposedly with images from the early 90's and the descriptions show but pictures wont. Appearently there is a pic with 631-1 & 1009 in service doing Q21A but that doesnt show. There are also images of 361 and another GMDD in service that doesnt come up either, just little red X. Appearently, an archive showed that Transitworld had images of RTS-03s in service but they didnt open since the only archives were when geocities went out in 2009. I did see a picture of 1012 in the GBL garage in the early 90s with the 1 big green stripe and it was already converted to square AC. It had Q10 on the Destination Sign.

R/S was the kneeler warning light. Apparantly in this case, buses were traded between the Cooper companies, most weren't repainted. Interestinly the Flexible Metro utilized the R/F turn signal when the kneeler was activared and the horn for the kneeler warning opposed commonly using seperate light and speaker for the kneeler.

That RTS-03 next to 604-1 looks like it says JAMAICA BUSES INC OPERATOR at the bottom near the back. I Don't know if Jamaica Bus RTS-03s got the final GBL Paint Scheme.

I Did see on eBay an image of 2 Fishbowls, 873-1 from Jamaica Bus with old dull green Fishbowl color scheme and another Fishbowl that I can't see the number of. It seems to have some form of the final GBL Paint Scheme with only 1 stripe. Also, I saw a picture of 1005 already with the Square AC on the back with the old 1 Green Stripe. No logo on the front though. It also still had the 2 sided Destination Sign. Both pictures were from 1989.

I think it's GREEN BUS LINES INC. OPERATOR.

It has a 1 on the number at the top of the driver window if you look really close. I don't know if Green just sent 1001 or 1011 there to get repaired or something because there is a picture of 1001 being scrapped in 2000 and this is definitely not from 2000. 1011 was also around at that point as well.

I still don't know if 631-1 to 636-1 or 301-1 to 310-1 got the final paint scheme if anyone can tell me if it did or not.
