These drivers admit to breaking the law, repeatedly, but are now claiming that because the tickets didn't arrive fast enough, they shouldn't have to pay?"Yeah, I block buses, and unfairly drive around other traffic by illegally using the bus lane, but if I knew there would be consequences for my actions, I wouldn't have behaved so poorly over and over and over again!" Drivers in this country have it so easy, kill with impunity, and are such crybabies. A la Helen Lovejoy: Won't somebody please think of the drivers?!? |

I'm all for penalties against lawbreakers but I think they have a good case regarding the delay in enforcement. Imagine if at this moment you were punished for every crime you ever committed in your life. So every time you jaywalked, every time you went above the speed limit (if you drive), every time you (fill in the blank). . .and you have to pay it all now because you found out they caught you.Unfortunately, for many laws are not applicable if they are not enforced. But one fine payment for the violations should be enough to ensure that these drivers do not intentionally repeat their behavior. |

That's a fair point. However, we are talking about a delay of three months for actions that impose costs on others (delaying bus drivers, forcing merges whenever these drivers encounter a bus in the bus lane, and risking the lives of pedestrians not expecting cars in the lane). If this were several years, I'd be a bit more sympathetic. In the spirit of compromise, how about adjourning the traffic actions in contemplation of a dismissal? The charges are not dismissed outright, and no fines will be assessed, but if another comparable traffic infraction is committed, all of the tickets and their fines will be reinstated for a given driver. I never learned how to drive, so I've never committed a traffic or parking infraction, but I do ride my bike to work every day. Knowing the danger that I pose to pedestrians, and the importance of setting an example of following the law to encourage drivers to do the same, I ride below the speed limit, yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks, marked and unmarked, stop at all stop signs, and wait at all red lights. It's easy to get away with breaking traffic rules in New York, but if we are committed to having fewer traffic deaths, we all have to obey the letter of the law. |
