The Massachusetts Bay transportation Authority is doing more to hire safe drivers.

The transit agency says, under new criteria - candidates won't be considered if they a driving record with a moving violation or at-fault accident within the past two years, a major traffic violation in the past five years or if they've refused a breathalyzer test in the past ten years.

The past standards were far more relaxed.

Back in May, bus driver Shanna Shaw was fired after investigators say she may have been distracted by her cell phone before a crash that left her bus dangling over the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Investigators found that over the last 20 years, Shaw had 39 citations on her record.

"Investigators found that over the last 20 years, Shaw had 39 citations on her record" How does a driver stay employed with all that?

A good union willing to defend one of their members, perhaps?
